OS X installation weirdness

Hi, 

I just installed virtualenvwrapper on OS X Mountain Lion according to instructions at http://virtualenvwrapper.readthedocs.org/en/latest/  and weird things are happening.  I submitted a bug, but perhaps it's not a bug, but that I lack context to understand why my Python environment is messed up on OS X, where there appears to be no similar issues on Windows or Linux.
