Hello there everyone,

I am a ham radio operator and I notice that Vinux out of the box does
not support ham radio operators nor it's software. I would like to
help the team or become a member of the team and I would like to
strictly concentrate on ham radio software which works well for the
blind. I have a couple of programs in mind as of the moment. They
are;

grig:
Grig is based on the ham lib library set which allows most amateur
radio transcievers to be controlled through the computer. Grig is
rather an older program but I may be able to contact the author and
have him do a bit of tweaking. My major concern at the moment for
this program which is almost totally accessible is to get where we ham
radio operators could input the frequencies through the numbers on the
top of the keyboard and a keypad too so you would be able to input
frequencies. I have a radio here which I'll be testing.

GSAT
Secondly, Gsat or Gnome Satellite is another good program. This
controls amateur radio gear which is meant to do satellite work and
also you can tell when the satellites pass. I would also be happy to
write documentation for these programs which apply to the VI community
only. I could include shortcut keys as well. I would love to hear
what others think. If Vinux is going to be for the blind let's cover
or at least try to cover all the areas where computers can be used for
the blind including to have fun and use them for our hobbies. This
may also help making transitioning from Windows to Linux a much easier
and more enjoyable for the VI folks who decide to come our way.

If you get these aps working well then it is easy enough to make an
easy-install script so that those who are interested in ham radio can
just click on the link and start playingg and working in a matter of
minutes.
Best of luck.
I don't know how others feel about this, but having 5 or even ten more
of these scripts available to quickly install programs that work well
with screen-readers would make the distro even more atractive.
Pidgin made it in, so I guess I don't need to do the IM scripts I was
going to do, but I'm thinking about putting together a script to enhance
web-2.0/social networking aps...
And I just found out a couple of days ago that the FB plug--in shipped
with pidgin is not newest, and does not auto update...the old one is
broken. It is 425kb, and that is probably only a little larger than the
old one...In next update of 3.0 and 3.1 this should be included.
The text-based games should also be made in to a script I think.

Hi Bert,

Yeah I agree with you. I found the same problem with my ham libs.
Ubuntu didn't ship the newest one and I am using 10.04 Vinux right
now. So I'll see what I can do and get back with you. Actually I
like the scripts the only thing for me would be to see what's
installing. For example, I installed the ocr script but I don't know
what installed with that.

Hi Scott, we always welcome new developers and it would be great if you want to help out with ham radio packages - there are a few guys on the mailing list who do ham radio stuff - the main restriction is always space on the CD, but this isn't an issue with the DVD and they can always be included in an easyinstall script. I think the idea of adding what is installed is a good one and I will try to update the easyinstall scrpts to include this in the near future.

Thanks Tony. I'll start working on this as soon as I get the
appropriate cord for my radio.

yes, you need to go and read each script to see the detail.
I can't remember where they are off the top of my head, but there is a
script directory.

Maybe someone can remind us of the full path, or I'll repost it next
time I go there. Think it is in usr/share/vinux

Okay Bert. In fact, I also have an idea to update orca and Brltty
from source. So I'll take a look at those scripts and see what kind
of magical gizmos I can come up with.
