Hello all,

After finally getting vinux 4 installed, without sound output going the rong way, I tackeled brltty problems. I am using a braillex elSleeping half-moon from a friend of mine for this purpose. So far, I have been unlucky. Braille seems to come up, and keeps only one line throughout the entire system session: brltty 4.3 rev ......

After removal and reinstall it was the same. I did however find out that Ubuntu decided to put brltty in the initrd, wich just might be cause of the braillex freeze. Logically I’m going to ask how I can both remove brltty from the ramdisk, and put the initscript in a runlevel after the ramdisk has been loaded to check if this is true...

Kind regards
Roland

Hi Anders and list

I just came back from another vinux 4 session, with the folowing results. First of all, I discovered that I could modify brltty behaviour in /etc/default/brltty. This however, as far as I could tell, didin’t make any difference after update of initramfs. So, simple solution, remove brltty. This did work, and no more unkillable autostart. So then, I went into the ubuntu pool and downloaded brltty 4.4.5-i386-ubuntu6.deb, and was able to install this one. After reboot, the braillex does show much more than brltty4.3, but navigation keys don’t seem to work. So, one thing fixed, another broken...

Kind regards
Roland

Hi Anders and list

I think I have some good news. I got brltty 4.4 to work, without breaking anything. Lucky for all of us, it’s fairly simple...

I will put the sollution for both amd64 and i386 here, so make sure you know what architecture you’re using before continueing.

From either the command line or a gnome terminal do the folowing
dpkg –install brltty_4.4-5ubuntu6_amd64.deb
or
dpkg –install brltty_4.4-5ubuntu6_i386.deb

As an alternative, you can also download the files, and open them via “files” in the Gnome menu. They will open with software center, so you just have to press “upgrade” enter your password, and you should be good to go...

HTH
Roland
