the new versions of gnome?

Hi,

 

When new packages and new versions of gnome with orca are released, will you be updating and making new images and virtual machines? I think another version of Gnome is due to be out by next month.

i believe the newest gnome is 2.6 and orca is 2.2.8

both of which i believe are still in lenny backports

Hi Josh, we are planning to update to the versions of Gnome and Orca
included in Squeeze in the near future, but that is a few versions
behind - I think it is 2.26, we are currently using 2.22 and the next
release will be 2.28 I think. We are using older versions because this
provides better stability than newer version, which is why we swapped
from Ubuntu to Debian. If you want the very latest versions of Orca, I
would recommend trying OpenSolaris which Willie Walker the creator of
Orca provides accessibility support for. This means you get the latest
versions of Orca, but OpenSolaris doesn't work with as much hardware
as Ubuntu or Debian, and there are not very many packages available
once installed.

If you run a virtual machine, you can take snapshots, and then upgrade to
latest gnome/orca. If things go bad, you can revert to the snapshot you took
before upgrade.

Now the question: what are the steps for upgrading gnome. The orca upgrade
instructions are given at the orca wiki, but I've never seen any clear
instructions on how to upgrade gnome.

Of course, they don't emntion Debien on this page, but I think the Ubuntu
instructions will work.

Hi

Gnome and Orca are recommended to go in pairs for example Gnome 2.26 with
Orca 2.26
I have tried running a virtual version to update to squeeze / testing a
number of times and failed. at some stage most things worked but still some
features did not work properly and made the upgrade not too practical, I
realized that some of the problems were at the core of the gnome upgrade.
Other people may be more successful, but while I learned a lot during the
process, I came to the conclusion that with my fairly limited experience of
Linux, I shall wait until Tony builds from the base up a testing / squeeze
version of Vinux.
