Speech as root in console

When I log in as root I have no speech. The login prompt speaks fine but as
soon as I log in the speech stops. Is this what to be expected? I have all
proposed updates installed.

Hi,
this is known.
Try logging in as your user then issuing.
sudo su
That should work.
