Hey all,

Picked this up about four weeks ago. Need to get it running more reliably. It's been in the brake shop for three out of four of those weeks.

I've replaced the battery and coil. When I first got it, it was leaking oil but now it doesn't appear like it is. It still has a good oil level. The v belt seems tight, per the idiot book, but it seems to be draining the battery when driving. Could the generator or bilge regulator be bad?  Or maybe just the connections?

Oh yeah, it was converted to 12 volt, but it would appear to be the most jury-rigged conversion ever.

Let me know, what you think, and I'll keep you updated.

It sounds like your generator or voltage (not bilge!) regulator are not working to keep the batt charged.  If you disconnect the batt positive post with it running and the engine dies, then you're running on your battery.  It could be worn generator brushes.

Test the output voltage of the generator/regulator with the engine running, rev it up a bit as generators don't work well at low rpm. You should get 13 to 14 volts when you rev it up. You can also check for parasitic losses by turning off the car and any accessories (dome light etc.) disconnect the ground cable on the battery, and see if there is a small spark between the battery cable and the frame, where you disconnected it. It is a good idea to clean up all the connections in the charging systems.
