My thought is that :bd doesn't close the last unnamed buffer so the
window won't close no matter how many times you pressing <D-w>, which
is a bit weird.

Issue 39: Cmnd-w does not really close files
http://code.google.com/p/macvim/issues/detail?id=39
New issue report by dmorel69:
On my setup, when using multiple tabs a :tab ball will show the files i
intended to close by doing
<D-w>. I guess there is some hardcoded mapping like :q but :bd would be
better imho

I'd prefer not to use :bd. This causes problems if you have several
windows viewing the same buffer. And I usually have much more open
buffers than windows (switching with BufExplorerer). It'd be annoying
if each time I open a temporary window and close it again one of my
buffers would die.

I agree. :q or such is what it should be, not :bd, IMHO.
Ben.
