so i remember what i digged out last days, that South African
Telecommunication Authorities has seized/collected all the equipment
of Dabba Orange farm..
my advice would be in this respect 2 wait, until all necessary
certifications and legal stickers are really on the gadget....

I'm glad you raised this issue. The certification of the Mesh
Potatoes will soon be complete. We are pursuing European standards
compliance which will in turn be submitted to ICASA locally for type
approval.
While I would not recommend a large roll-out, I think that small-scale
roll-outs of Mesh Potatoes in South Africa as proof of concept is
unlikely to run much of a risk. We'll continue putting up a
proof-of-concept Village Telco in the Bo-kaap.
Once type approval is received from ICASA, all existing Mesh Potatoes
will be covered.
Perhaps Rael can comment as well being as he was on the sharp end of
the Orange Farm incident.

i would like 2 see how many potatoes can mesh without any or only
minor problems under field, not under laboratory, conditions. 10, 100,
1000, 10.000... what do you think?
it is also a fine method of rapidly deploying telephony in big events,
e.g. loveparade or others like that and also in desaster conditions
where urgent communication as a third layer, beyond landlines and 3G
has its demand ... of course i understand the original concept of
bringing cheap phone into 3rd world

Now that we have production Mesh Potatoes instead of just a
comparatively small number of beta units, our immediately priority is
to explore how MPs scale. Laboratory conditions would be great but we
are operating with quite modest resources. Our plan is to build up
the MP network in the Bo-kaap in October and use that as our open air
laboratory.

Absolutely. David Carman, Antoine Van Gelder, and Bretton Vine
masterminded just such a deployment at AfrikaBurn earlier this year.

maybe its a model. i have some friends in tansania. and seacom and
eassy and national tz backbone now has also arrived @arusha, later on
also @dodoma. dar es salaam of course.
let´s see what will happen in short future.
