Hi,

Has anyone used the Raspberry Pi as a villagetelco server?  I'm thinking the server would have an optimize version of asterisk, nginx as the http server, and so on. Please share your thoughts and documents.

I have'nt tried it, but it should work ok. The only challenge is transcoding, as more and more providers only use G729 codec.

The only drawback I can see is that you would probably want another ethernet port which would need to be added via usb to ethernet adaptor.

I’ve been testing the Raspbx image, which includes Asterisk 11 and FreePBX 2.11 – it is a great combo.  I have stress-tested it with sipp and it handles 20 simultaneous calls (playing music-on-hold).  I also tested an 8-person conference.

 

It works great with both alaw and gsm, but ilbc is a bit broken.  There is an experimental g729 codec.

Great! From http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org It looks like it is possible to install asterisk alone on the Pi. However, running Raspbx along with apache may be an overkill. A different configuration for the Villagetelco community might be more beneficial.  That would include asterisk, nginx, mysql, php, a2billing, etc. Does anyone has document s/he would like to share on how to install A2Billing along with nginx? I know it could be manually involved. However, your invaluable time would be highly appreciated. A brief howto added to the villagetelco wiki would be helpful.

Having had my own issues debugging nginx for the villagetelco.org and wiki sites, I am happy to try to help if you get stuck.   It remarkable how much leaner it runs than apache.

The Raspberry Pi seems to have enough Ram and horsepower to run quite a bit.  The Raspbx image includes php, mysql, apache, asterisk,and the Debian is nice.  It should be simple to add a2billing.

 

The flash sd cards are inexpensive, so 8Gb is quite practical.

All class 10 SD cards guarantee a worst-case minimum writing speed of 10 MB/second, but may have different maximum speeds based on their speed rating (which addresses both reading and writing).  I don’t know which brands/models have particular speed ratings, but all class 10 cards will be faster than class 4 cards, which have a minimum writing speed of 4 MB/second.

 

Note that class 10 is the fastest class for SDHC cards. 

 

There is also a new (2009) UHS speed class (UHS Class 1) that is applicable only to hosts supporting the UHS data bus, but it also has a minimum writing speed of 10 MB/second.
