I'm including the Vigorous Hikers and Mountaineering Section listserves in this distribution to see if there is any other interest out there.

Ross Downer and Rush Williamson have expressed interest in joining Carol, Tom, and I in the Adirondacks Jan 15-23.  The details of our arrangements are discussed below, but space at ADK Loj is limited.  I also included my wish list for the trip.  The info on Mountainfest 2010 is now available at http://mountaineer.com/?page_id=83.  Let me know if you have any questions after reading through all of this.

Carol & Tom,

Carol called a week ago to tell me she had some of the last reservations for the MLK holiday weekend at ADK Loj and needed us to come up with some plans so we can lock in the dates.  I mentioned this to Tom last Tuesday, but I’m not sure of the exact dates that the Loj and Grace Camp still had openings.  I just now had time to sit down with the maps and come up with some things I’d like to do (we’d be doing well to accomplish half of this.)  It’s all weather dependent and subject to your ideas.  If you are interested in ice climbing, Mountainfest is a good place to try it.

Jan 15 – drive to ADK, 8 PM Mountainfest film festival at Keene Valley HS, night at Loj

Jan 16 – bushwhack up Nye & Street Mountains, 6 PM spaghetti dinner at Keene Valley firehouse, 7:30 PM Mountainfest slide show at Keene Valley HS, may also be a slide show at the ADK visitor’s center, night at Loj

Jan 17 – day hike up Iroquois Peak, 7:30 PM slide show at Keene Valley HS, night at Loj

Jan 18 – hike to Grace Camp (possibly over Marcy), night at Grace Camp

Jan 19 – loop hike over Gothics, Armstrong, & Upper Wolfjaw, night at Grace Camp

Jan 20 – loop hike over Saddleback & Basin, night at Grace Camp

Jan 21 & 22 – overnight hike back to ADK Loj with possible summits of Haystack, Gray, Skylight, Redfield, & Colden, night of Jan 22 at Loj.  Those that don’t want to do an overnight could hike back to the Loj on Jan 21.

Jan 23 – drive home

Dave

Hi Ross,

The following are a string of e-mails that outline where we are with our Jan 15-23 ADK trip.  Tom, Carol, and I are going.  ADK Loj is fully booked for Jan. 15-17, but we have plenty of room at Grace Camp Jan. 18-19, and one space available at ADK Loj cabin on Jan. 21.  We're planning to camp out Jan 20.  You are welcome to join us for all or any part of the trip.  We can discuss it more next Tuesday.

Dave,

So, I was assured this would be the last time I get scheduled to work on a Tuesday! I'm very much looking foreward to the bushwhack up Old Rag next week.

Anyway, I'm writing with a few questions about the Adirondack trip you mentioned before. I would be HONORED to join you on this journey. What are the dates/timeline of the trip? I looked around on the listserve and saw the dates 1/18 to 1/22 but just wanted to make sure.

-Ross

Hi Dave (and Tom),

It’s great to hear from you.  I think the idea of getting more people to share Grace Camp space and the cabin is a good one.   Yes the Loj is fully booked Jan. 15-17.  I had also been thinking that a tent would be the way to go for our winter campout, and a 3 man one seems best, as we will have the benefit of each other’s accumulated body warmth.  I am back at work now, and things seem to be getting back on track.  My talk in London at the conference was well received and I had my 15 minutes of fame there.  Back at home and post-surgery, it turns out that my eye problem was apparently an allergic reaction and is slowly clearing up with the aid of a steroid salve. Knee surgery is scheduled for Nov. Friday 13 – lots of open slots on that day!  I am still interested in Ellsmere Island so keep me in the loop  Thanks for your morale support during my enforced off-trail exile.  It is frustrating to be sidelined for so long but I hope to be back with you all before the end of the year.  Please tell everyone in the Tuesday group that I miss them all and look forward to seeing them again.

-Carol

Hi Carol,

Thanks for making the reservations.  I'm sending you a $190 check.  Tom and I discussed it today, but what do you think of announcing to the Vigorous Hikers and the PATC Mountaineering Section that we have 3 spaces available at Grace Camp for the nights of Jan. 18-20 and one space available at a Loj cabin on Jan. 22?  I take it that ADK Loj is now fully booked for Jan. 15-17.

I'll send you my equipment list when the time gets closer.  I just lightened my load my another 5 ounces with the purchase of a Therm-a-rest NeoAir pad with my 20% REI coupon.  Unless we can keep a roaring fire going in front of the lean-to all night, we will probably be warmer in a tent.  I have a 3-man winter tent that wouldn't be too heavy if it were split 3 ways.

We still don't have definate dates for the Ellesmere Island trip, but we think we've found another group that is going up there in June that we may be able to split a charter airfare with.  If you are at all interested, I'll keep you posted.

Hope all is going well with your recovery and good luck with the knee operation.  It must be very frustrating too be sidelined up with these patch jobs.  I look forward to hiking with you again on Tuesdays and to enjoying another winter trip to the Adirondacks.

Dave

Hi Dave and Tom,

I have made reservations as follows:

1/15, 1/16, 1/17 stay at ADK Loj bunkroom ($50 per night, dinner an additional $17.50, but I didn’t reserve any dinners for us yet)

1/18, 1/19, 1/20 at Grace Camp ($180 per night, $60 each, bring our own food)

1/21 no reservation, so right now we are committed to one night at a backcountry lean-to

1/22  Cabin on grounds of ADK Loj ($150, $50 each, bring our food)

1/23 (Saturday) drive home

I gave the reservation department a deposit of $570 on my credit card (50% of the total), so you guys can each send me $190.

Our total cost for lodging for all of us will be $1140 minus my 10% ADK discount of  $114, so $1026, but that’s without taxes and dinner or lunch add-ons.

If we need to cancel these reservations for any reason, we get our deposit back if we cancel Grace Camp by Nov. 18, ADK Loj by Dec. 22, and the cabin by Dec.22.  .And by the way, they are expecting snow there on Saturday.  Yippee!

-Carol

PS Please email me to let me know you received this.  As we get closer to the time, it would be helpful if Dave can send his intended gear list.  I might need a little advice on what to bring for our one night at the lean-to, since I haven’t winter camped in many years, except for on glaciers with guide services where they provide everything.  And also, keep me in the loop as you discuss our spring AT plans.  Dave, I don’t think I can do the Greenland trip – it is very expensive.  Would it conflict with my college reunion June 3-6?
