New Hampshire White Mountains Hiking
What: A week of day hiking and other activities in the Franconia, Crawford and Pinkham Notch areas including the Presidential Range and Mt. Washington. We will be based at AMC lodges and all participants will have considerable flexibility in the hikes in which they wish to participate. We will take 3 cars to ensure this, but many hikes will be available from the lodges.
When: September 15-23, with first and last days for travel.
Difficulty: The range of our members' capabilities. We will be able to consider 2 or 3 different hikes each day of varying challenge. However, the trip is intended for "vigorous hikers."
Accommodations: 3 nights in Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch and 5 nights at the Shapleigh Bunkhouse and Highland Lodge at Crawford Notch. See http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/
Hiking Guide: White Mountain Guide http://www.outdoors.org/publications/books/wmg/white-mtn-guide-online.cfm
Participants: Maximum of 8.
Cost: Maximum $750 including share of transportation costs.
If you want to participate and haven't told me, now is the time to let me know! You should be willing to pay a deposit of $190 now to cover your share of the already paid upfront cost to secure the reservations. The maximum risk for this deposit is $20 if you cancel and no one takes your place. I do intend to accept one or two alternates if anyone asks.
To entice you, here are some of the possibilities on the trip:
Climb Mt. Washington via Tuckerman Ravine or via the much more interesting Huntington Ravine and then looping around the northern Presidentials.
Climb to and tour the northern Presidentials via the Great Gulf.
Climb 5000' vertical to Madison and Adams using a northern approach.
Traverse the Wildcat ridge.
Traverse the Franconia ridge.
Hike to the spectacular Bond Cliffs in the middle of the Pemigawasett wilderness.
Climb the Webster Cliffs section of the AT.
Loop over Kinsman, Cannon and the Cannon Balls.
Not to mention evenings hanging out at the lodges or doing the town in Gorham or North Conway. Maybe the latter on a super rainy day also. But this is the best time of the year to hike in Northern New England: Least rain and most sunshine of any time of the year, bugs and crowds are gone, and the colors can be unbelievable.
Hope to hear from a few of you soon. Regards,
Bob Livezey
