Vigorous Hike 16 Apr - New Market Gap North

New Market Gap North, Massanutten Mountain North, GWNF. (PATC Map G) We’ll take the Massanutten Connector Trail to the Massanutten Trail over Kerns Mountain and then proceed North to Jawbone Gap. We’ll descend the Jawbone Gap Trail and then use the Gap Creek Trail to get the intersection with the Scothorn Gap Trail.  Time permitting, there will an optional out-and-back to ascend Duncan Knob from this intersection.  We’ll return to the trailhead by the Scothorn Gap Trail, Massanutten Trail, and the Massanutten Connector Trail.  Without the optional ascent of Duncan Knob, approximately 15 miles with 3,700 feet of ascent, the option adds another mile and 500’ of climb.

 

The trailhead a large parking area on the South side of 211 just East of the Massenutten Visitor’s Center.

– the Massanutten Connector Trail starts right across the street on the North side of 211.

Plan to depart the trailhead at 8:45 AM.

Park and Ride off I-66 West, exit 52, Centreville, go West on Rt 29, take the second right into the parking lot, then immediately left to the corner of the lot where our group gathers.
