Phnom Penh

20.4.2015

Ray,

I got my visa, and Milly’s,  from the Vietnamese embassy here, and I have from today until 19 May, so I should have a chance to get up to see you at Dong Ha, though will also see you in HCM.  Tell me, what is the weather like in Dong Ha and north of the Hai Van pass at presest – is it cold, freezing drizzle or what?

Otherwise how is it going with the English teaching.  Did you meet Ms Right yet?

Best,

Jimmy

thats great. right now the weather is totally mixed. a week ago we had rain that we shouldn't have had. i spent the weekend in hue and it was miserable, rain, rain, rain. the only fun i had was watching some silly tourists who wanted to get a feeling of the war by riding around in reconditioned american jeeps and got more than they bargained for. i haven't seen this on such a large scale before but in saigon a few weeks ago i noticed entire fleets of jeeps drawing up to various hotels, the caravelle included, to take tourists around the city by jeep convoy. the craze has spread to danang. i was standing on the steps of my hotel (the wonderful la residence) when another fleet of jeeps drove up from danang. but it had pissed down all the way and the only cover the tourists had were thin vietnamese style pac-a-macs. they looked like drowned rats. i know all too well how they felt but i had to chuckle to myself. i don't think they will be taking too many rides in jeeps anymore.

anyway, from the rain we have now suddenly gone into sweltering mode. today it was nearly 40 degrees and hot hot hot. theoretically it is the start of the hot season here so i can only anticipate it will be like this now for the foreseeable future. not pleasant, but at least we are not walking out in the boonies swallowing salt tabs. i'm gonna stay a couple nights en route down to saigon at la residence which is turning into my favorite hideaway haunt.

no miss right in sight. there's still some beauties around and i could easily fall fast. but i aint gonna do another chika and the ones i do like...quite young...are interested in me as a grandfather figure and not as a swashbuckling lover. i am resigned to remaining celibate for the rest of my days.

the teaching is up and down. i really like reacting with kids and trying to pass on 'the knowledge' but because of bad planning by my NGO i am not sure i am being truly effective. but its still fun.

i arrive in saigon on the 28th and staying at the continental. i am going to see le ly Haslip. we are either gonna have dinner ourselves on the 29th (with anyone who wants to tag along) or if there is an appropriate hack get together i will invite le ly to that. but as i said in earlier message when i suggested people might want to meet her in a low key drinks or dinner session i didn't receive a single reply so i assume none is interested. its always all a little cliquish at things like this and i don't have the time to waste on that.

Hi, Ray, and thanks for the briefing on what you've been up along the old DMZ.  Serves them tourists right for thinking it'd be real cool to ride in an open jeep. (And yes, you know it's all over when those lovely-as-ever women are calling you "uncle" and "grandpa".)   Sorry for not getting back earlier re Le Ly Haslip who'd be most welcome to join the Group of an evening on the Roof of the Rex any night of the week.   But I'm sure the evening of the 29th will be the biggie.

Look forward to seeing you on the 28th.

Best,

Carl

Say, Tony, you'd better double-check with Tung re your hotel.  We've now been moved to the Huong Sen down old Tu Do Street, now Dong Khoi, 68-70.

You'll be first into Saigon!

Cheers,

Carl

will do tony. but i just realized i committed a stupid booboo. i thought i was replying to pringle in a private email but somehow i routed it to everyone. i have never in my life committed such a stupid thing and though it wasn't totally incendiary it was a little embarrassing.

reminds me of that idiot stephen smith when he sent an email to all the wallendas destroying alexis gerber's bid to become foreign editor in the most sexist and demeaning terms. but he also sent it to alexis who burst into his office one saturday morning threatening all kinds of legal actions. he didn't last long after that.

christ i will be more careful in future.
