I have had many many Mustad hooks break at the barb. I have a draw full of flies with broken Mustad hooks. Quit using them about 15 years ago.

Interesting. Maybe I'm not clamping my hooks tightly enough in the
vise, because I can't ever remember breaking a hook in the vise,
other some 28's. And nearly all of my hooks are Mustad.

Before Japanese hooks hit the market, Mustad Norwegian hooks were the most common in Canada, with a few English hooks if you could find them.
I have experienced 11% breakages with certain Mustad Norwegian hooks, but I probably had a bad batch. They also used to break if one smashed down the barb too hard.

Since that time and the introduction of competition from Japan, Mustad have been forced to improve their product.

Allan,
They were not breaking in the vise. The barbs were flattened before the flies were tyed. The hooks broke while catching fish. It was discouraging to cast for a half hour and missing fish before finding the point of the hook was gone.
When you come over for Sowbug, I will show you the draw I have the flies in with broken hooks.

Strong grooved jaws cinched tightly on a ill-placed brittle hook = breakage.

That is what was happening Flattening the barbs I believe fractured the point.

That probably explains it.  That was back before they improved their quality as mentioned by Neville.

I still have a lot of Mustad hooks maybe some day I will put them up for sale. I went to Eagle Claw hooks when I quit on the Mustads. Have been doing fine with them. Still have a load of them that I want to dispose of. I am not tying for the shops now.

Mike,

Your verb form was all wrong.  Instead of "getting old", it should have benn "got old".   :-(

If some old-timer doesn't conk you for your disparaging remarks, you'll get there too.  :-P

We made it home without any issues.  Got to Scott's house at 3:00 am, and I made it about 20 minutes ago.  Wayne is probably getting home right about now.

Had a great time at the Sowbug 2012.  Thanks to all!
