"If we carry purism to it's logical conclusion, to do it right {fishing} you'd have to live naked in a cave, hit your trout on the head with rocks, and eat them raw. But, so as not to violate another essential element of the fly-fishing tradition, the rocks would have to be quarried in England and cost $300 each."

My bride will have a yard sale and sell the rods for 5 bucks or so and just throw away everything thats left over. What a waste it will be. How can we educate them as to thier real value. All of us have some "classics". I have a Mint Ted Williams Fly Rod, reel and Case, a never used St Croix 4/5 weight made in the 60's, and a couple bamboos that need to be refurbished. I guess we can make a list and put toe tages on the collectables. My daughter neds to get married and have some kids I can leave this stuff to. HA!!!

Finally, my second oldest son is having a baby boy this month. Will be the first grandson. I was overjoyed to find out it will be a boy. My first thought...I finally have someone to leave all the hunting and fishing gear to.

The granddaughters haven't shown any interest in hunting, fly fishing, or fly tying as yet. I may not succeed in the hunting, but there is hope in the fishing.

"The 'thump' registering through the rod translates instantly into a pounding heart for the angler who knows he's tied into a big spring smallmouth. For the bass on the other end, the response in nearly the same, as it fights against the resistance of the rod and line. In fact, a short 20-second struggle can elevate he fish's cardiac output to such a level that it might need an hour's recovery time for its heart to return to resting levels. If the battle lasts two or three minutes, the fish might require three hours or more to recover."

I remember the first fish that I caught on a Fly rod. It is an experience that I will never forget. I had been struggling for hours to get a good cast, it being my first time on a river. Come to think about it, most of the time I still struggle to get the fly where I want it. But anyway, I was on the north fork of the Duchene river. My father had given me a few pointers and sent me off to try my luck. I was dressed a lot differently then what I wear now when I go fishing. If anyone else was around I would have been laughed off the river. I didn’t have any waders, only knee high rubber boots and a pair of shorts. It was in August, so it was hot. I cast to a spot that I had seen a nice brown resting under a over shadowing tree. It took me a couple casts to get it where I wanted and then the battle began. It went up and down the river for hours it seemed like (it was only a few minutes). My heart was pounding (to get back to the quote and the reason I am writing this). It took me hours to calm all the way down. Once I had reeled the fish in, I had to sit down to relax. I have had many other experiences from that time, but you never forget the first. I hope that I haven’t bored anyone with my little story.

Thanks

John:  Is the North fork the stream that enters from the north at Stockmore, up the Duchesne River from Tabiona?  I have been past that confluence many times, and I have driven the West fork when deer hunting, but never on the North fork.  This is something that needs to be done.  Soon.  We should plan to meet (after the run-off).  I could meet you and Tom Davenport in Kamas, or Woodland, or Francis, and drive over Wolf Creek Pass down to Stockmore.  Let's make it happen.

Yes it is the same area. My father owns a cabin up a canyon about 3-4 miles before you get to Hanna on highway 35 between Woodland and Tabiona. We fish that stream that flows down that canyon. It is about 20 feet from the cabin. There is also a ranch there (can’t remember the name of it) that has cabins that you can rent or there are camp grounds up there. It is the same canyon that has a access road up to grand daddy lakes. There is still snow there from what I understand, but the run off isn’t that bad up in that area. My father has had a lot of success with renegades and wd-40s.

Sounds like it would be a great trip. If we plan it right, we would have a place to rest and eat. My father spends most of the weekends during the summer up there. I’ll have to talk to him to find out the conditions up there.

Thanks

John:  Thanks for the quick reply. The world is a small place in some regards.  I know a family who owned a ranch Hanna.  The name was Myrthen Moon.  I grew up across the street in Springville from them.  Myrthen's wife taught school, and stayed in town, but he spent a lot of time up there.  As a kid, I remember driving out there with my Dad to hunt at least twice. I understand that one of the boys (John) retired from the Utah Highway Patrol and is living in Hanna now.  I will look forward to the time that we can turn this into an "expedition" because I really enjoy seeing new country and finding new places to fish.  If we continue this conversation, let's do it off-list to save space and avoid boring all the other listers with our narratives, etc.

We have a family cabin in Hanna.  It backs onto the Duchesne.  I love that area.  There are some smaller areas there that are great but can't take a lot of pressure.  The North Fork has lots of "put and take" fish.  I have had obnoxious days there.  It is great for kids.  We have taken a 5 pounder there at Old Stone Face.

In my opinion and with my fishing skill (or lack thereof), I say, “ANY FISH IS A GOOD FISH.” I take what the river gives me.

Dr. Whittle you are so correct.
Have you noticed that trout (from my experience) taste different when caught at different lakes.  To back tis observation up and what rekindled my thoughts on this is an article in the May/June issue of the Northwest Fly Fishing magazine. The article was written Alan Liere and entitled The taste of trout. His experience is from Eastern Washington and mine are from Northern California. The Rainbows from Frenchman Lake (high desert) taste more sharp than those from Antelope (NE Sierra Mountins), Alnamor (sp)(NW Sierra Mountains) and Eagle (500' high plus)Alkaline Lake) Lakes. You go to McCoy Flats and they taste like MUD but they sure do fight. So in essence; alltrout do not taste the same and I, for one, am glad for it!
