Nicrophorus orbicollis odor
I had one land on my hand at a black light the other night here at my house. It left a very pungent odor on my hand that smelled a bit like horse dung, but more powerful. It took a good scrubbing with hot water and soap to remove the smell completely. I was wondering if that is perhaps the pheromone that males emit to attract mates or was it residual smell from... more »

15 beetles
I have a favor to put out to the VES community; I need some help IDing about 15 beetles. There is a masters student at UVM looking at different ground cover manipulations and arthropod diversity who is interested in keying out some ground beetles to genus, and if possible, species. Coleoptera are not my area, and I was wondering if there is anybody that would be interested in helping her. Her timeframe is "sooner rather than later" and I told her I'd see if I could get someone to help in the next couple of weeks. There's about 7 or 8 Carabids, a couple Tenebrionids, a Curculionid, and a few other specimens from assorted beetle families. I can send them if need be, or she can drop them off. We're both flexible in that area.... more »

comma ID
Can someone ID this comma? It doesn't fit all the descriptions for Eastern Comma but that's the closest I can come. I believe these are all the same individual. Post to List?
I would like to post the following, and wonder if it is a Leptoglossus, perhaps occidentalis? Found in building 2/23/12. There have been several others found over last few months. Thanks Phil Bannister Putney, VT
