With this issue we begin the fourth year of publishing our online
journal "for the mutual support, education, and inspiration of people
of faith, in the practice of love for our fellow animals and
observance of a nonviolent diet."

In this issue:

* The Editorial, "The Spirit, the Light, and the Animals," Part II,
examines the implication of visions of transcendent Light and Fire for
our relation to other animals.

* The NewsNotes includes a report of Oregon's new law banning sow
gestation crates.

* The Gem, "Of a Boy and a Bunny," is a skit inspired by characters
in a Steinbeck novel, but readers need not be familiar with the novel.

* The Film Review reports on THE LAST MIMZY, a story of two
remarkable children and the ecological crisis; it is due out in DVD
July 10.

* One of the Book Reviews describes THE REINDEER PEOPLE: Living with
Animals and Spirits in Siberia.

* The July Recipes are four Salads for Summer, including one for
companion animals.

* Our "Pilgrim" this month is PT reader Juli Maltagliati, who has
felt a deep respect for living things from early childhood.

* In July we celebrate the life of Quaker Ruth Winsten Harrison, who
wrote the trailblazing 1964 book Animal Machines exposing the horrors
of factory farming in Britain.

* Former reviewer Fay Elanor Ellwood writes a Letter commenting on the
theme of the Spirit in the June editorial.

* In the Poetry column is "In Examination" by Rupert Brooke, which
narrates an experience of perceiving transcendent Light through a
classroom window.

As ever, we welcome responses from our readers, including
contributions for the "My Pilgrimage" column.
