In this issue:
* The Guest Editorial, originally from a Jain pamphlet entitled
"Ahimsa," relates the reverence for life underlying vegetarianism with
world peace.
* Norman Cousins penned one of the Unset Gems, which speaks of the
power of an individual, acting out of conscience, to awaken the
collective conscience.
* A NewsNote reports that Maine has become the most recent state to
ban confinement crates for pigs and calves.
* By coincidence, a Letter from Carl Sheppard addresses much the same
topic as the Editorial.
* The Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom is an expanded version of the
now-famous film clip of the joyous reunion of Christian the lion with
his human foster parents, Anthony Bourke and John Rendell.
* The Recipes are for a vegan Gruyere cheeze and a tomato sauce with
unusual herb seasoning.
* Processed People, a documentary dealing with the effects of
processed food and especially animal products on our health, is the
subject of the Film Review.
* Complementing the Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom film clip is a
Book Review discussing the 2009 edition of A Lion Called Christian, by
Bourke and Rendell.
* Episcopal priest Rebecca Dinovo tells her Pilgrimage story of
returning to her childhood love for animals, expanding her awareness
of the issue, and integrating it into her church ministry.
* The June Pioneer is Steve Willey, a Friend and PT subscriber, who
became a compassionate vegetarian in 1956 at age twelve, and held to
his commitment despite massive opposition.
* The text of the hymn "Seek for the Light," based on lines of George
Fox, is this month's Poetry selection.
Would you like to tell your Pilgrimage story? In particular, are you
(or do you know of) a Pioneering figure, i.e. someone who became
vegetarian or took other action on behalf of animals prior to the
beginnings of the contemporary movement in 1973? Please let us know.
