In this issue:

* The Guest Editorial by Peter Singer looks from several angles at
the often-heard protest "Animals eat other animals, so why shouldn't
we eat them?", showing its weaknesses (some of which were already
pointed out 200 years ago).

* One of the NewsNotes tells of agribusiness giant Cargill's plans to
phase out crates for pregnant pigs.

* In a Gem by Matthew Scully, we hear of the penchant of factory farm
owners to give their concentration camps charming countrified names
like Clear Run Farms and Happy Valley.

* One of the books reviewed is For the Prevention of Cruelty, a very
readable history of animal activism in the United States from 1866 to
1975.

* Two of the Recipes are a very special shepherd's pie and an
irresistible chocolate cake. If you have them both at the same meal,
you will think you died and went to heaven.

* The Pilgrimage column is by Jean Randall, who became aware of
animal concerns through watching the Nova television series.

* Our Pioneer for May is Cesar Chavez, a heroic advocate not only for
oppressed farm workers but also for our suffering animal cousins.

* The May Poetry column features Francis Jammes' "Prière pour aller
au paradis avec les ânes," together with a translation by Jethro
Bithell, "Prayer to Go to Paradise with the Asses." This childlike-
seeming work succeeds in conveying both compassion for the suffering
of overworked donkeys, and delight in the innocence and sweetness of
these beloved children of God.

As always, we welcome letters of comment about any part of the
Peaceable Table.
