Great news! In the previous months, Eric, Daniel, and I have discussed reaching out to the UBC Life Extension community as they appear to have very similar memetic interests to the Vancouver LW group, and could boost the value of our community immensely if we could bootstrap the process of getting to know them. However, as introverts often in need of remedial instrumental rationality on how to go out and meet people in real life, we haven't been able to accomplish this very well. However, I've just spent the last couple of hours IMing with an active member of that community, and he seems to be exactly the type of person I was hoping a member of the UBC Life Extension Community might be. Depsite his only tangential encouters with Less Wrong, he seems to quickly and aptly graps some basic ideas from the Sequences. Even if I don't make it to the Meetup this week, as you surely have noticed I often can't come on weekends, this fellow Mike and I are going to hang out this week, and he seems to have tentatively agreed to attend the Vancouver LW meetup even if I can't make it. He seems like quite a an affable fellow who fits neatly into the atheist/transhumanist/libertarian clutserspace, and may offer a great opportunity to network with our unkown fellow kindred spirits in this city of Vancouver. I only hope that our meetup hasn't shifted to a possibly quite alien-seeming utilitarian/futurist-EA clusterspace such that Mike won't be able to relate to us anymore :P

P.S.: the last sentence of the above paragraph was intended as a joke, and I would implore you not to read into it so much that this thread dissolves into a nitpicky debate-discussion that I can barely follow of exactly what sort of ideal LW rationalists we should be. Because politics is the mindkiller, or whatever, m'kay?

You can't do weekends? Should have told me. Maybe we can shuffle the time around for you.

Thanks for recruiting. I really should be doing more of that I guess.

Libertarian? Transhumanist? Atheist? How mainstream. We respect only Singularitarians, Reactionaries, and Provisional Atheists (there is no god, yet). (Joke).

Look forward to meeting this guy.

I met Mike today. We spent the afternoon talking about Peter Thiel's ongoing projects, the genetic basis of psychology and personality, why and when democracy fails, why conventional education sucks, the rise of China and the decline of Europe, and life extension, among getting to know each other in general. He brought up like half of those topics himself, so yeah, I think he'll fit in. I explained to him my rudimentary understanding of FAI and MIRI, and what an Eliezer Yudkowsky is.

Wolf, I don't feel comfortable sharing Mike's email publicly here for sneaky ne'er-do-wells (they know who they are) to see, so I'm sending you an email with his email so you can invite him to the Mailing List. Thanks.
