Subject: Fundamental Research - Ideas?

Here's a request for some research that has to exist somewhere, but
I'll be darned if I know where it is. I had a request for backup
research for the following statement:

User's want / and will use a website more / that has log-in
protected state.

First off... before the objections start... I've already started
unpacking this question:

This question is tough to answer, because it is actually two questions
rolled up.
1. Do you prefer to log in?
2. Do you prefer custom information or custom tools?

The answer to 1. is no, people do not want to be bothered with logging
into websites. In fact, it is annoying to have to do this. As evidence
that web users do not want to be bothered with this activity I submit
the following facts:
Facebook, and every other social networking site that exists, has a
“Keep me logged in” function so that once you log in you do not have
to bother doing it again (often for an extended period of time,
sometimes forever).

The answer to 2. is yes, people do tend to like customized information
better than one-size-fits-all (if it's done right).

BUT... I can't find studies on this...

Anyone know of such things?

Hey, in reply to my own post, I used this Nielsen data to show that
sites with extensive functionality behind login (read: facebook) enjoy
much longer visitor sessions and engagement.

Therefore, it's not the password (duh) but the functionality that
drives interest.

Still interested if someone has other studies showing this.
