UX BookClub // 4.28.10
"Neuro Web Design" by Susan M. Weinschenk, Ph.D.

NEXT READ // Web Anatomy

WHAT WE LIKED //
1. Easy to read on a treadmill
2. Good 100 level class
3. Good reminder book - especially when considered in respect to
upcoming projects
4. Story about the Jam sampling in the grocery store showing how more
choices disabled people's ability to make decisions.... fewer options
like Chipotle or Qdoba (see "The Paradox of Choice" - discussion
maximizers & satisfisers - people can be different types related to
different choices)

WHAT WE DIDN'T //
1. Not as web-centric as expected; not as in-depth as expected
2. Referenced lots of books that we liked better
3. Liked "How We Decide", "Practically Irrational"
4. Very light in respect to content

Notes:
1. Number of things a second your brain perceives vs. processes (i.e.
food, sex, fear, etc)
2. Interesting to consider what the unconscious mind is doing & how
you can change things up (i.e. walking over lunch, coming back and
having a solution)
3. Microsoft offices builds features like Cheesecake Factory adds
items to their menu
4. Building commitment through self-personas was an interesting
concept (i.e. you are a slightly different persona in a dorm room vs.
grandma's house); identity lives in the consumer's mind
5. Always shocked with the number of variables on any problem; feels
like you could choose any number of reasons to justify any choice;
some clients do have goals in place and it's comforting to have (or
help them create) some limitations & metrics for success
6. Lots of similarities between this book & parenting books (rewards,
etc)
7. Role and perception // as the UX, it's really necessary to step
outside your role to be successful
8. "Chunking" keeps us in business and isn't natural to all team
members or client
9. UX is always a liaison between the user, the business & the
technology you're using
10. The 5 Whys trick - used to help bring user needs & business goals
together (keep asking why to let them keep talking)

Hi all,

I'm sorry I wasn't able to be at the April meeting. Since I wasn't
there, I want to confirm the book we are reading for May. Is it the
Web Anatomy by Hoekman and Spool?

THanks, and I look forward to seeing everyone.
