I have a chance to get in on a group buy for solar panels, I was told "$3/kW installed." I presume that is supposed to be $3/W? Is that a good price locally? Many thanks.

It has finally warmed up, how about a meeting the last Saturday of the month, May 25?

Also, I'm pretty handy so I could install things myself, but might have it done if the price is right. In other words, I'd be interested in how about much panels should be vs. installation. Many thanks.

HI Dave good news I got some more used bat tires from the same place I did last time. Soon as I get some time I will be installing them. Game on!

If that includes installation, then that is a very good deal. Most of the systems I have been looking at cost about 2.50 per watt just for the hardware.

How large of a system are you going to buy ?

Mark, glad to hear you are going to get that great car back in action!

Kyle, thanks for the link. I'm actually thinking of two systems:

It would be nice to have one on my trailer to keep the batteries topped up. Right now I need to run the generator an hour or two a day to keep them charged when I use it off-the-grid. A 500 W system should be more than enough for this duty. I could also buy more batteries, and charge them continuously before a trip, and get by with a smaller solar system. It would be nice to eventually get rid of the gas generator entirely.

I have always wanted some solar panels on my house. I think my two biggest interests would be emergency backup to run my furnace, and dump charging the electric car. My inverter needs would be modest (~1500 W might be enough). For the dump charge, I would just get enough batteries to dump charge the electric car, so no fancy electronics needed there (or I could use the regen feature of my controller to regulate it if I wanted to). So there would be no big hurry to charge -- I'd dump charge every few days if the panels couldn't keep up, and only worry about running the furnace if the power was out.
