Mark, glad to hear you are going to get that great car back in action!
Kyle, thanks for the link. I'm actually thinking of two systems:
It would be nice to have one on my trailer to keep the batteries topped up. Right now I need to run the generator an hour or two a day to keep them charged when I use it off-the-grid. A 500 W system should be more than enough for this duty. I could also buy more batteries, and charge them continuously before a trip, and get by with a smaller solar system. It would be nice to eventually get rid of the gas generator entirely.
I have always wanted some solar panels on my
house. I think my two biggest interests would be emergency backup to run my furnace, and dump charging the electric car. My inverter needs would be modest (~1500 W might be enough). For the dump charge, I would just get enough batteries to dump charge the electric car, so no fancy electronics needed there (or I could use the regen feature of my controller to regulate it if I wanted to). So there would be no big hurry to charge -- I'd dump charge every few days if the panels couldn't keep up, and only worry about running the furnace if the power was out.
