TF is 2019 Texas Ten

Ten talented University of Texas at Austin professors have been selected by the Alcalde to be a part of the annual Texas Ten awards.

Each year, alumni nominate the professors they felt were the most inspiring to them. From these nominations, Alcalde magazine chooses the top ten professors they believe left the biggest impact with their students and honors them with the title of the Texas Ten.

This year, our own Professor Toyin Falola emerged among the top ten professors celebrated by UT Austin Alumni as having made the biggest impact on their lives and for being so inspirational. The story is here:

https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/public-affairs/news/14030

Join me in celebrating the latest Texas Ten, a distinguished and unalloyed honour, Professor Toyin Falola.

Thank you for sharing the news!

Professor Falola has long served as a case study of the level of recognition and adulation that can manifest when those were never the goal.  Falola has never sought an award, yet we see an avalanche of them.  It is remarkable to see white institutions such as UT, even though it is his own university, periodically acknowledge and create space for the magnitude and majesty of Falola’s contributions and impact.  Such institutions cannot begin, in my opinion, to understand the depth, profundity, and still unfolding meaning of his contributions, yet I am happy about the recognition since it signals ripples and waves that neither we nor they can fully predict.

And a fantastic sketch, Professor Afolayan!

Vik

I congratulate Prof. Toyin Falola, my mentor fro this great accomplishment. We are very proud of him because so many of us are beneficiaries of his selfless devotion to the growth of scholarship in the world. When I attended the first Africa University of Texas Conference at Austin with luminaries such as E. S Atieno Odhiambo, Thomas Spear, among others, it opened doors for many of us. This is where I first met Prof. Kefa Otiso and we established Kenya Studies Association which has become the leading premier academic organization on Kenyan studies today. Over 20 Kenyan scholars are now full professors from assistant professors such as myself and Prof. Nasongo largely due to Toyin Falola mentoring in publishing. May God give you more years and awards in future so that he can mentor more and share with many more others.

"What more can I say in praise of Professor Falola’s teaching?  In order to convey more of what I think you should know about this man, I am even tempted to praise myself.  Would you believe that if I myself am a good teacher, it is partly because of Falola as inspiration?  Well, you will accuse me of violating the protocols of a reference letter and producing instead a hagiography, so I will stop.  Let me just say that I will sympathize with the committee members if they find themselves feeling overwhelmed." (VB)

Those outstanding words of Vik, a courageous fellow in all ramifications, continue to pass the test of time. I wonder what courage one has to write a letter of reference for the wonder man, TF!

Subject: Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - TF is 2019 Texas Ten

Vik's letter of reference is spot-on. For a 2003 letter of reference, it is indeed prescient.

By way of adding my throaty congratulations to Toyin in anticipation of greater things that will most certainly follow, I do have a question: Why did it take the Alcalde  this long?

I too join others inexpressing hearty congratulations to you Professor Falola for this recognition. How I wish your scholarly works could be translated into Nigerian and African languages for wider readership.

Yet another award to The Professor who so eminently deserves it. The fact is that awards in honour TF will never cease. Pray that Olodumare will cause TF to fulfil his years to ripe (old) age in sound health so he could harvest them in full. Congratulations Ojogbon Agba.
