to USA Africa Dialogue Series
Its seventy-five years
Since voice of Ogun
Was heard in Ake
Suburb of Abeokuta
Announcing birth of a devotee,
Wole Soyinka,
Holding pen and paper
Defying masquerades and scarecrows.
In adulthood
In old age,
He pokes his fore finger
On their hideous faces,
His fiery eyes
Search their twisted minds.
As his husky voice
Seeks to stop their thievery,
Altars of immorality quake
And jubilations resonate
In the slums,
Abodes of the people.
