Tax question - please help

I heard that the first $2,400 of Unemployment comp is tax free per
person- federal and CA state ?
Does it mean a couple will get $4,800 ?

Please confirm.

I can answer only the Federal tax part: For taxpayers who file a
12/31/09 year end federal 1040, they reduce their unemployment
compensation by 2400, but not below zero, and any amount above
that is taxable as ordinary income.

If this is a married filing jointly return and each taxpayer has
unemployment, each reduces their unemployment income by 2400, but do
not reduce below zero.

California does not tax unemployment income.
