Hello everyone. I'm basically just wondering if you all could give me a
little advice and information. I'm getting ready to leave for Germany on
Thursday, and it's going to be my first unit. I just completed AIT on the
14th of Dec. and have been on leave since then. I'm just wondering what you
all can tell me to expect my first day and the first few weeks. I'm real
excited to get to go to Germany, but I'm also nervous about going to my
first unit. I was wondering about stuff like TV, Internet, travel, all that
kind of stuff, and also what to expect from my unit. Any past
stories/advice/information you can give me would be great. I would also
like to know stuff like the rooming, how it works, if I'll be in my own room
or with a roomate, what to do when I arrive in the Frankfurt airport, how to
get to base, stuff like that. Anything and everything will be greatly
appreciated.

Moberly, don't worry. Your NCOs and buddies will take care of you. We
can inundate you with advice but I think the best is to have fun,
listen up, use your head, and watch the guys who have the good reps.
Learn from them, both professionally and personally. And get out of
the kasern... meet the locals. Do this and you'll do fine.

And enjoy! I spend 5 years there and had a pretty good time. Graf not
withstanding.

Don't forget, those were dependents of soldiers and not soldiers themselves.
It just proves that even over in Germany, some American parents do a bad
job.

I'm going to assume you meant the original poster to this thread! I just
left Germany last November after almost 10 years there. :-)

Funny, I going back to Germany on Thursday myself. Allot of the stuff
you are asking about will depend on your unit. Some are great some not
so great. Just remember you make of it what you want to. First off
Internet can be expensive if your a webdog, TV is AFN (Armed Forces
Network) and usually atleast one season behind the states. As for
travel, the swiss alps are great, if you get a chance go there this ski
season. Most holidays are 4-days (unit dependent) so if your not at
graf.(BTW I don't know anybody that likes graf) you can get places. As
for what happens on Friday (you said that you fly Thursday so you won't
arrive until Friday) It will depend on if your flying MAC or not.
Either way you will want to make your way to the 64th Replacement Co.
Make sure you have a couple copies of your
orders handy. If you don't know where you are assigned by the time you
leave there you will. Thing is Friday is a USAREUR Holiday so I don't
think that they will be open except to get you in a barracks for the
weekend. As for your room question, that is dependent on your unit.
As I have seen it Pv2 don't get there own rooms unless everybody has
there own rooms. And the only places I would imagine that happening
are the small posts out in the middle of nowhere.
Couple of pointers. Don't plug your 110v devices into the 220v
outlets, bad things happen when you do that. Remember your a guest of
this country, obey there rules. When in doubt ask somebody. And get
ready for the culture shock, they do things differently here, just keep
an open mine.

Another pit of info. If you don't have a state side license, get one
fast. From what I heard its next to impossible to get a USAREUR
license if you don't have one. I hope this helps.

The internet thing in Germany is improving slowly. I was with a company
that just went bankrupt called Surf1 which had unlimited internet and a free
phone call for like DM90 a month (about $45). A lot of people are going
with Telekom now and they seem to be the best.

This one is for Moberly: If you get "stuck" at the 64th over the weekend,
get a group of guys together and take a cab down to Sachsenhausen in
Frankfurt. Look for a place called the Irish Pub. It's kind of in the
corner there. *sigh* I remember many nights spent drunk as hell in there
back in 1992-93. You won't be sorry! :-)

Man does this bring back memories. I used to fall in love with the
waitresses with their Irish accents.

The funny thing here is the way times change. When I first went to Germany
in 1964 all I was worried about was hostile Germans and learning the
language to get by. Now Soldiers want to know about TV and the Internet.
My how times change. My first German tour was on a Nike missile site in the
south of Germany with 400 French Air Force members on a French base. 35
Americans. I HAD to learn German if I wanted to do anything off base like
drink beer, eat, shop, party, etc. We were isolated, but it was a great
place. Then I was moved to Vahihgen just south of Stuttgart (HQ 7th Army,
Patch Barracks), and I saw my first AFN TV show and American cars.

Wish we did have the Internet back then. Would have made life easier. Took
about seven days for a letter to reach home them.

I remember meeting tons of women from all over the world there. Especially
during the summer when they'd set the tables up outside so you could sit
outside and drink. It's too bad they don't have places like that around
here. *sigh*
