Noteworthy Special Projects/Assignments at International Paper:
Coordinated all aspects of feasibility and facility studies for more than 50 projects during a three year period; the capital requirements for projects ranged from $5 million to $200 million. Developed scope-of-study for each project, detailed study teams’ participation and work product requirements, organized and hosted meetings to initiated studies, established study schedules, surveyed facilities as necessary, interfaced with plant and facility managers, monitored contributions of engineers, accountants and specialists, summarized study results, edited all written work-product contributions, produced and distributed comprehensive, formal, written reports, and provided formal oral reports to upper-level corporate managers and officers.
Member of resident team of engineers with individual and team responsibilities for managing all phases of major $470 million expansion of currently operating plant in Saillat, France. The 26-month project involved oversight of French consultants’ work product, to design and engineer new facility, select and contract with equipment and systems’ suppliers, maintain successful schedule for early startup, guarantee uninterrupted operation of the existing plant and assure safety of all personnel. Primary responsibility included management of consultants’ efforts to design, configure and implement an integral $20+ million plant-wide Bailey process control system, with principle authority to establish system specifications, identify the rudimentary system architecture and control design standards, screen potential equipment suppliers, negotiate equipment purchase contracts and delivery schedules, and establish and monitor schedules for engineering, configuration, checkout and startup.
Designed and supervised installation of process control systems’ hardware and provided control system configuration for numerous control systems and their peripherals, including the following: Computer Products I/O, ROLM military specification computers; Westinghouse, General Electric, Telemechanique, and Allen-Bradley programmable controllers; Valmet, Foxboro, Honeywell, Bailey, Moore Products and International Paper’s Dual-ROLM Distributed Control Systems.
Provided extensive hands-on hardware support for International Paper’s proprietary, redundant, Dual-ROLM distributed control systems. Conducted off-site staging, and on-site installation. Ordered and received system components. Designed small equipment modifications and cable harnesses. Installed components in racks. Extensively simulated, tested and burned-in all operating components. Verified successful communications protocol among distributed control system computers and all peripherals such as keyboards, operator panels, video equipment, alarm enunciators, indicator lights, and programmable controllers. Exercised and functionally tested all rack systems (analog and digital, input and output devices) during off-site staging and on-site start-up. Managed systems’ transport to mill site and the site setup and testing. Trained the mill maintenance staff to perform required maintenance and diagnostics.
Programmed FORTRAN supervisory controls, data management routines, and TCP/IP data exchange programs for the Harris and DEC mainframe computers. Developed assembly language programming for Intel 8085-based video character generators.
Acquired proficiency in the use of many personal computer application programs, including: Lotus 1-2-3, AmiPro, WordPro, Freelance, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Word Perfect, and AutoCAD.
Provided production and maintenance work support and developed curriculum for the training of replacement workers, during the work stoppages at Androscoggin, Maine Mill and Gardiner, Oregon Mill.
Conducted facility engineering and safety audits for corporate legal counsel as part of a special program to comply with mandates from OSHA.
