Enom is the way to go, especially if you want API access.
Normally it's a little expensive to get an account there, but you can
signup through HostNexus for free. :)

Yes, declarative-authorization is awesome. It takes time to get your
head around it initially, but it's not too hard.
Yeah, check out the Railscast Ryan Bates did, and you can get it off

I've been a reseller with hostgator for about 2 years now and a
customer for over 4. Their reseller program is super easy, and the
whmcs(free) integrates nicely with webfront of your choice.

I have all 40 of my domains through enom. Love the service, pricing is
great with my reseller account via hostgator. $9.45 per year for main
top level domain names.
Super simple UI and functionality.

Just for clarification, if you were to sign up you're not really becoming a
reseller of a reseller...as far as GD is concerned you're still theirs, and
your rates are still the same. I just get a little credit for having you

I'm more interested in finding a registrar to deal with directly than to
become a reseller of a reseller. I'd like to move away from GoDaddy because
of some past experiences too. Just in case somebody is interested I found

Check the link JT included on GoDaddy's api...if you are primarily after
registering domains I think it will do what you want.
And, since danggood.com is a godaddy reseller, I think you can purchase the
api reseller package from it too (btw...I'm the friend of JT's...
danggood.com is my reseller account).

I'm more interested in the Registrar side of the equation. I need to
programatically create/update domains and if they can do the dns for me too
great. We've used GoDaddy for a long time but I don't know of any type of
API to do that.

I'm pretty new to rails, so I've only used cancan. It was very easy
to implement though. Works just like I would expect. No idea how it
compares to other RBACs.

Are you specifically looking for both registration and DNS, or would just DNS with a good API work?
I register most of my domains through [link] (A Godaddy reseller with rates usually lower than Godaddy) and use their internal DNS unless I need to control it via an API. If I need API-controlled DNS, I choose from [link] or [link] depending on what my needs are for the specific project.
