What happened to BYU.rb? I joined URUG over the summer while I was at
home in California. I'm now back at BYU, and I was expecting the group
to start up again after the semester started. Is there no one to lead
it? No one interested?

I'd love to see byu group active again as well. The CS Department is
definitely still very much supportive, it would just require someone to run
with it.
I know I'm like the perpetual BYU student, but my time there is (hopefully!)
coming to an end. I'm more than willing to help get the group up and going
again (give anyone the inside track on scheduling and working with the
department and school) and with presentations etc. I'm sure there are many
here in the group that would help out too.
If you're at BYU, I'd highly recommend that you lead the group for a while.
I learned a ton while I was at it, it is possible to balance school with it
(like Mark Twain said, don't let schooling get in the way of your education
:) ). I'm definitely proof that you don't have to be a ruby master to pitch
in and help out the group.
Man, this is all got me reminiscing. So when I first went to the group Byron
Clark was the president (he wasn't even a BYU student) and after a few
meetings we had an (unexpected to me) leadership change meeting. Byron
explained that well, he wasn't a student, and that the BYU group should be
run by a BYU student, then everyone looked at Duane Johnson and I and said,
"Well, you're the only two students here, so which one of you wants to be
the president?" We decided that I would be the president first since I was
closer to graduating and then it would be Duane's turn. Well, I ran it for
the next two years and Duane beat me out of school by a long shot. Good
times.
Anyway, if you're a student at BYU, just do it already :)

Okay. I'm a CS student here at BYU, but I'm leaving on a mission in
February. I'd be glad to lead something until then, however. I'd love
to meet everyone else in the group, but I don't have a car to get up
to UVU. Perhaps the BYU crowd can all get together a little more
informally and I'll handle scheduling the room / time for the next
three months, until I leave and somebody else can take over. Or,
perhaps the BYU crowd could arrange to carpool together up to UVU if
we feel like there's not a big enough group here. Which would everyone
prefer?

I think a *BYU.rb carpool* would be great and I would be happy to support that.
That said, if there are truly a good number of us BYU folk attending UV.rb, then we can establish a plan to create a group on campus after a UV.rb meeting. A good solution?
Sounds good. Towards the end of this week, let's figure out a plan and
see how many BYU folks we can get up there next Tuesday.
AJ, I'll email you my number.
Thanks,
Andy

I don't think the proposition is an either/or. When the byu group was
meeting we definitely still carpooled up to the then nascent utah ruby group
(you guys remember meeting at Ben Galbraith's house? good times). I full
heartedly support a carpool originating at BYU headed towards the uv.rb and
slc.rb meetings -- although I still think there is some great value in
having a group meeting on campus.
Waiting to see if there are a number of BYU folk attending uv.rb assumes
that everyone who would attend a byu.rb meeting are already participating in
uv.rb, which I don't think is true. An on campus group seems to be a smaller
step for most students who've not been formally introduced to Ruby and its
amazing community.
