Dear Upstate Locavores,

We have some exciting news about our next potluck, to be held on Thursday September 3.

As mentioned in our previous announcement, the theme for our potluck will be the Slow Food organization's "Time for Lunch Program", a national day of action to support getting whole, healthy foods into schools. (More information about Time for Lunch is at www.SlowFoodsUSA.org)

We are excited to announce that the potluck will feature Sally B. Gardner, RD, LD, Director of Student Nutrition Services at the School District of Pickens County.  She has agreed to update our group on a variety of topics, including the Farm-to-School Bill. Ellie Taylor will follow-up with comments why kids in America need healthier, whole foods.

Sally has been in the area for approximately one year, but has accomplished much in this short time.  She has changed school lunch recipes in Pickens to include more fiber, less fat/sugar.  She has changed food provider contracts to insist on working with local farmers and accepts no produce grown outside the US.  And, she has even worked in S.C. on the Farm-to-School Bill.

We will also invite the other School Nutrition Directors in neighboring counties in the hopes that they, too, can attend.

This is a very important topic, so please invite parents, kids, doctors, politicians, and anyone you know who is interested in seeing local, healthy foods offered in our schools.  There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. We would especially love to hear from our school-age children!

We would appreciate your support in getting the word out about the potluck.  A flyer is attached  - please post in your workplace, church, school, library or farmer's market.

Some additional details:

We will gather at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Clemson, 226 Pendleton Road. Dinner will begin at 5:30 on Thursday, September 3.  Each person attending should bring a dish made with at least one locally grown or produced item.

We would also appreciate it if everyone could bring their own tableware (silverware, plate, glass) - this makes clean-up much easier!  And, please bring a friend or two!  We'd like to get as many people involved in the "Time for Lunch" campaign as possible.

As mentioned in the previous e-mail, it's always fun to see (and eat) the wonderful dishes that are prepared with local ingredients.  At the Upstate Locavores Spring Potluck, we enjoyed a variety of dishes made with local ingredients (see our website for a list of some of the mouthwatering dishes that we enjoyed that evening!). And, if you are willing to share your recipe, please e-mail us at UpstateL...@gmail.com.

We’ll see you in a few weeks!

Ellie Taylor and Catherine Mobley
