Dear Upstate Locavores,

A number of you have asked how you can help out with the efforts of Upstate Locavores.   We have an opportunity for you to help support an important source of local food - the Student Organic Farm at Clemson University.

Since its inception in 2001, the Student Organic Farm at Clemson University has been self-supported through a combination of grants and market revenues. However a critical source of grant support was recently and unexpectedly withdrawn. This means that without additional support, all of the Farm operations, all associated research and education projects, and the market programs will be terminated. This will be a terrible loss to our community, our sustainable food supply and the on-going education for students as well as our area.

Next Saturday, November 22nd, the students are sponsoring a fund-raising event called Farm Aid.  Our Upstate Locavores will sponsor a bake sale table to help them raise money.  There will be bands, food and sales from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Calhoun Field Lab (located across from the football stadium, but accessed off the road to the Madren Center - follow the signs).

We need to act NOW to ensure continued existence of the Student Organic Farm!  In recognition of the Farm's value to the Clemson community, please show your support by delivering some baked goods to our table some time that day.  All items are welcome - for example, Ellie is making some of her cherry stone warming pads to sell. Items made with locally-grown or locally-produced ingredients would be wonderful, too.  All contributions will be welcome!

If you wish to volunteer at the table, to donate baked goods to the sale OR need help delivering your food to Farm Aid - email Catherine Mobley (cam...@clemson.edu) or Ellie Taylor (elp...@bellsouth.net).  Or call Ellie at 864-654-1331 or Catherine at 868-6530.

Also, Split Creek Farm is having their Christmas Open House the same day/time as Farm Aid.  Maps will be available at Farm Aid if you wish to visit both Farm Aid and Split Creek.  It is also turkey-harvesting day at Barefoot Farms (ask Ellie about ordering chickens or turkeys from them for the spring).

Thank you, in advance, for helping us to save the Student Organic Farm!

Ellie Taylor and Catherine Mobley
