With the Cheat currently at 1 foot and a 0% chance of rain forecast
for tomorrow, what should we expect this weekend? Will we have a 13
mile portage?

I guess it would still help to get us in shape?

Bobby G. can probably tell you about what it is like below 1ft as we did it near zero back in the summer of '07.  There was a lot of carrying boats over the ledges that make the river so fun when there is good flow.  The water was also ridiculously hot at the time because the coal plant up stream had so little water to cool with, it literally steamed in 90 degree weather. (more horrifying than the rust colored side streams) I don't recommend it, but Tom might have another opinion.

Attaching a picture.  Anybody want to take a shot at identifying the rapid?

How about a long day of drills and skills at Dickerson, instead?

Good idea Jonathan if Tom says the river is too low to run!

PS If Dickerson is even on with the Slalom paddlers out of town that is!

No it is still a fun and beautifu river - gets creekier - High Falls gets trickier at lower water levels.  I might hesitate to run it below 500 CFS - makes for  a long day = I don't think you need to worry about portaging except possibly High Falls.

HI,

Dickerson is closed until May 4th for a scheduled power outage at the GenOn plant.  Our next workout will be the following Saturday, however, because of Cheat Fest, May 12th.

Hello:

If the Cheat is way below 1 ft, we can run the LY and everyone takes 2 non-stop race runs.  There is always Dimple to flip over in.

Katie and all,

With 1 ft. level on the bridge and about 800 cfs in the river, there
should be enough water to paddle the Cheat this weekend. Some places
will be scrapey, but there will be an opportunity for newbies to run
all the rapids and learn the lines. I have run the river to as low
as .5 ft, and even that level was possible and fun.

So, hang in there everyone, we will have a good day Saturday, and
you will come away with better knowledge of the Cheat River.

See you Saturday. - Tom
