Car-poolers should remember to contribute to the driver's fuel costs
and shuttle costs, and a bit extra for wear and tear to the vehicle.
Does $25 per free-loader seems fair? What do the drivers think?

It would be nice to agree on some standard payment so that drivers
weren't left with the uncomfortable burden of "charging" passengers,
and so that prices didn't vary by driver, thus possibly creating
uncomfortable feelings.

Thoughts?

Jennifer,

Last week everyone in the van chipped in $25. That was about right to cover the gas in the van. - Tom

Lets have auctions for the van seats, the best ones going to the high bidders.

In my opinion, the driver should not have to pay for any gas or for the shuttle. I agree everyone should pay for "wear and tear" on top of that amount. $25 sounds much too low for gas. I believe we paid around $65 per person (three tanks of gas).

Tanya, are you talking about a one-day out-and-back Cheat trip, or a
full weekend with the Cheat and then creeking class?

One day, that is what we contributed last Saturday. I was grateful that our driver agreed to bring his car and that it did not appear to be damaged from the trip. I also shared in the driving.

If you are willing to bring your car/truck/van - I am a good person passenger!

Clearly, this group is dominated by a bunch of "tax and spend"
Democrats! :-) Given the varying nature of vehicles, situations and
personalities, I think free market forces should determine
contributions. And there should be a chicken in every pot!

Those riding with me have to listen to bad music, get to pee only when I
have to, and watch me eat vast quantities of unhealthy foods (at least
according to Jen and Juliana). My gear stinks, so the car smells bad.
And people generally fall asleep because I'm really boring. Tolerating
all that is surely payment enough.

Nope, sorry Jonathan. I handle the seat booking for Mr. Munnell and currently there are no openings. If there were opening, please be advised that one has to be fluent in German or incredibly Sassy to be considered.

Best regards,

Juliana

Okay, its clear that my attempts to standardize this
pay-for-free-loading process, and my hopes to avoid guilt and
uncomfortable feelings about charging too much (drivers) or
under-paying (passengers) has failed. However, we have established
that something between $25 and $65 is the range we are working within.
We have also established that everyone will want Tanya in their car.
And, we have established that John Munnell doesn't like to pay his
taxes. I guess that is a start. :)

Other thoughts welcomed.....

Hi Juliana,

I'm Sassy, have some swagger and speak NYC Yiddish Hipster slang...that should be good enough for a reformed bread eater, like yourself.

No goose stepping, though, that's all over now!!!

What are you driving that eats 3 tanks of gas?! My beast of a truck only
uses $100 of gas. That said I will happily sell tickets in my vehicle for
$65. Alas I will miss this week though.:(

Does part of being considered "sassy" have something to do with boat size oriented comments, because such comment should be weighted w/ a length to weight ratio, which would put you in a play boat for "attaining workouts", is that sassy enough?

Yea, i share Graham's thought as well. My car carrying three boats and
passengers uses about 3/4 of a tank each way. Cost is about $40-$50
per tank. So, even high-estimating two full tanks (one each way), and
high-estimating $50/tank, the trip is a total of $100. If I have three
passengers, and we each pay $25 then that covers it.

Passengers should be paying their share of gas, the drivers shuttle
($10 total) and a bit extra for wear and tear. Putting the driver's
kids through Princeton seems like a bit much to expect.

So basically we've established that about $25-$30/free-loader is
reasonable, kenny will take anything that smokes or can be mowed,
diego doesn't make sense, tanya will be very popular, john will pay
his taxes after all, jeannine misses us, and tom needs a business
manager.

Thanks all, for your thoughtful input. :)
