Hey all,

So it appears that the vast majority of folks who participate in
discussions here go ahead and join the group. I don't have detailed
statistics, but I would estimate that something like 1/10 of the posts
that end up in the moderation queue from non-member posts are not
spam.

I propose changing the list to allow posts from members only. New
members will end up in the moderation queue until they get approved a
couple of times. People who prefer to read on the web only can sign
up and select "no-mail" for delivery. Personally, I do not think this
is a terrible barrier to entry for inclusion in these discussions.

If there aren't rampant objections this change, I'll implement it in
the next day or two.

Since there were no objections raised, I have changed the setting on
the list. Since I made the announcement on the 13th, there were about
10 messages that came into the moderation queue. All were spam and
all but one were from non-members. The remaining spammer has been
banned. While this isn't a statistically significant sample, it is
not atypical.

Anyone is still allowed to join the group and participate, but posts
from new members are held for moderation.
