closing down centralized donations?

Hi!

We already closed down our Plain Old Banking System account at
Berliner Bank on Bank Transfer Day last year. Now we have
decentralized our project so that each individual can accept tips,
donations and grants for their work.

Jan is now doing design and usability advice for various unhosted web
apps, and maintaining LiteWrite and DoCrastinate, among other things;

I'm now focussing on completion and advocacy of the remote storage
spec for the rest of 2012, but i'm already 100% funded by nlnet and
not currently accepting any donations until at least summer 2013.

Niklas is the maintainer of RemoteStorageJs for which he is funded
jointly by nlnet and Wau Holland Stiftung.

We have a crowd-funding campaign coming up for ToS;DR
(Terms-of-Service;Didn't Read) which is scheduled to start on 10
september at IndieGoGo, with a goal of probably about 10,000 euros.
This is an extraordinary project that rates the Terms of Service of
many well-known hosted software services. It started here on this
mailing list, and is now getting a lot of mainstream press attention
thanks to the great work of our rockstar law student Hugo Roy, see
http://tos-dr.info/

In other words, if we close down centralized donations, then you will
still be able to donate, but to specific goals and people, not to an
abstract central "the unhosted project" pot. I hope this is OK with
everybody?

By closing down the centralized flattr and paypal accounts, we also
avoid having to pay more taxes and having to deal with tax office
medieval "customer support". We can always revive the central pot if
that makes sense in the future, but right now we have nowhere to spend
central donations on. On 9 september we'll hold an e.V. meeting to
report how much centralized donations went through the e.V. during
last year's T-shirt campaign and presence of the 'donate' button on
the unhosted.org website (it's roughly 5,000 euros i think).

As i said, I hope this is OK with everybody. :)

why IndieGoGo and not something running on open source platform?

Hi Pavlik,

yeah that's also an option, although one seems to be aimed at Brazil
and of the other one the website is not loading for me. also, we're
applying for Gruender Garage who double your money if you use
IndieGoGo, and we need to look at how many people are already using a
certain platform and how reliable it is.

i personally would prefer to bypass the Plain Old Banking System
altogether, and use OpenTabs instead :)

in any case, we should discuss this topic on the ToS;DR list, not on
the Unhosted Web Apps list.
