This is an interesting 43 page pdf describing Federal Reserve Balance
sheet in 1930s and early 1940s:

http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/docs/publications/bms/1914-1941/section10.pdf

this paper is really interesting if one is a studying gold standard
banking, war finance, and changes in currency mix and banking during the
depression. Many core concepts still apply to the more complex balance
sheet of the contemporary Fed. There are 9 pages of discussion and the
rest is tables of data.
