Hi all.
The only real problem I have with my Ultimaker these days is with the
material feeding. The stock feeder works 99% of the time, but ever so
often I'll come home to find a ruined 4-hour print due to the filament
being stripped. My plan is to use Scott's Ultistruder MK2 (http://
www.thingiverse.com/thing:19551) to solve this. Really looking forward
to getting it running!
The video is from the MaxiFab project on Kickstarter, suggesting using
almost just basic parts and no hobbed bolt. Thoughts on how this will
work? He sounds very confident?
When I wrote that I'd been having a lot of issues, but I found out they
were hot end issues. The thing's been kicking ass ever since I fixed the
hot end problems. I had a 40+ hour print last week! :)

Yup. That one's absolutely on my list to try. I'll try this one first
but, I just need to get that MK6 gear. But - you're working on that
one, right? ;-)
Oh right! Sorry, yes, I am! I modified it last week actually, but then got
pretty caught up in stuff for the Maker Faire. I have a few things to mail
out, so I'll get them all together and try to do that tomorrow. :)

From what I'm seeing the upgrade is really worth the money. It's:
a) easier to clean
b) better to assemble (no over-tightening possible)
c) more power (from sharper and more precise teeth)
d) no curling of filament (helix shaped rotation)
e) and therefore less friction in the tube (because the bite marks are on
the bottom and stay there)

How does it stop the helical feed pattern? I've noticed before that
the twisting of the filament is making it more difficult to feed, but
I can not see any way to prevent it.

The helical feed pattern was created by the way the v2 hobbed bolt was made
(from a THREADED rod - therefor the twisting). The new bolt is CNC machines
as far as I know and has a strictly symmetrical and sharp pattern.
I will keep you posted, if I manage to do another round of comparison, but
from what I've already seen: 100% must have item.
For example: I've never seen a dirty v3 bolt so far. They just don't get
dirty, because I've rarely seen one failing (eating the filament), due to
better performance. And even if you're having something stuck in it:
Disassemble the whole thing with just one step (unclipping the delrin part)
and knock it several times against a table. That's it. There's no hobbed
area where it could stick to. Just sharp teeth :)
