Hi All,

I'd like to sample the groups experiences regarding radio links.

I've recently joined this group after being bitten by the Near Space
bug. Thinking about a building a flight of my own, I'm researching
radio links for tracking a flight. One resource I found,
http://www.radiometrix.com/cu-spaceflight, describes clearly their use
of radio, transmitters, and filtering to obtain a clear signal from an
H.A.B.

One thing that caught my eye is their reference to using the
Radiometrix NTX2 transmitters - which are based on FM modulation - and
receiving through an SSB filter.

My question is this: SSB seems to be a derivation of AM modulated RF
signals ( http://www.ycars.org/EFRA/Module%20B/AMTX%20Intro.htm ).
In this case, how can an FM signal be received and passed through this
SSB filter? How does the ground transceiver know to demodulate an FM
signal, if it is set to SSB (USB or LSB), which would suggest an AM
demodulation mode?

This question is based upon my extreme ignorance of RF work, so if the
answer is 'obvious', please be gentle in your responses!

thanks!

Hi Hascent,

If you can get onto IRC now, I am there for a bit and will be happy to talk you through.

Hi Ed,

Alas, I have no IRC connection - as I say, I'm a total newbie at all
of this! I need to figure out how to get IRC up and running.
In fact, HASCENT contains a reference to my inexperience: High
Altitude Science with Cameras, Experiencing New Technology (!).

If you can share some insights in this forum, or send a personal
email, it would be great to chat!

Cheers,
matt
