Anyone know what the rules are with regards to the colour of car license
plates? I've recently seen a couple of cars with white rear plates. Is this
legal? Are the white lettering on black background plates still legal too?

Thats what I figured. Though I doubt the BMW owning homeboy I saw driving
with them cares much. Probably wasn't even insured.

TBH , if someone couldn't tell which direction a vehicle was moving in they
really should have gone to specsavers.

Correct me if I am wrong but does Gibralter not have white alpha-
numerical on black background plates?

Dunno what the rules are in Yankyland. If it's a British LicenCe plate,
it would have to be on a car first registered before about 1973 to be legal.

Correct me if I am wrong but does not Gibralter have white alpha-
numeric symbols on a black background for their numberplates?

Licence. Not license. We're not part of America - yet.

Oh sorry , was that it? Well thanks for your input, a very valuable addition
to the debate.

It depends upon which country they are registered in as to whether that
is legal or not.

US license plates vary by state. Some states, such as Florida, do not
require front plates. They usually have freedom to use any 7 letters
or numbers in any combination. One of the best I saw was U WANKER on
a Virginia plate.

:-)
The States' licensing departments do carry out a "decency" check on
vanity plates, and would disallow rude words. But words which are not
used in US English, like 'wanker' or 'bollocks' would tend to slip
through. I assume the car you saw was probably driven by an ex-pat Brit.

Oddly enough, on one of the Police programmes last night, the Police

I saw "BOLLOX" on a S Carolina plate, along with "WE SHAG" which
allowable as the shag is a dance in the Carolinas.
