Just shows that not all lorry drivers are the highly trained pro's they'd
have us believe:

What a complete twat - how did he ever expect to get through that arch?

As the maximum height is 8ft 6ins, it could catch out a lot of drivers
who are not normally affected by height restrictions. There are systems,
using an infra read beam and a matrix sign, to divert over height
vehicles in such circumstances and I am surprised there is not one here.

Perhaps they just assumed no one would ever be dumb enough to try and drive
an HGV through it. By the looks of it you'd be pushing it trying to get a
large box transit van through.

That was rather my point. It won't take large vans or many caravans, so
why isn't there height detecting equipment ahead of it? The driver of a
lorry of bus ought to know his vehicle height, but many people with
smaller vehicles could be caught out by a height limit of 8'6".

Could have saved the fire service going by letting some air out of the
tyres, surely.

I don't think infra-red beams were in widespread use in the 14th
century.

Quite so. I think Roy of the Rovers did exactly that, in a comic strip
long long ago. For some reason his pre-season training consisted of
jogging ahead of a low-loader and looking out for low bridges.

Or was it Billy Dane - he of the magic boots?

I did it myself when I got a van stuck under a portico a few years ago
- the back was higher than the front.

Sounds like an Alf 'Tough of the Track' Tupper ploy.

You're right, you're right, you're absolutely right. Thank you for
reminding me. I tried Googling but I was on the wrong track, thinking
he was a footballer. Alf Tupper was very much a runner. There's more
information - more than anyone could possibly want - at <http://
www.toughofthetrack.net/>.
