I recall this claim being made not that long ago by Stevensons of Newlyn -
Fish Merchants and Trawler Owners - though recent cutbacks in fishing fleets
may have depleted numbers.

Well, I had an excellent day out with a CRSC group on Thursday..
We started on JUPITER from Gourock at 0845 for Dunoon, Rothesay,
Tighnabruiach and Tarbert, passing en route SATURN, en route from Dunoon to
Gourock, PIONEER at Rothesay, which held us up a few minutes because we
needed the large gangway and so could not use the other berth and LOCH
DUNVEGAN at Colintraive, usefully employed at last. At Tarbert we managed a
non-landing trip to Portavadie on ISLE OF CUMBRAE, then took a hire bus to
Claonaig and a crossing on LOCH TARBERT to Lochranza. Another bus to Brodick
and back up the firth on the WAVERLEY.
On Friday, I toured NCL's NORWEGIAN SKY where my son is serving as a
photographer. Munro's (Clyde Marine Motoring) were operating three vessels
as tenders, ROVER, SECOND SNARK, and newly acquired POOLE SCENE, now in
their colours with a dark blue hull, and reportedly to be renamed MARMION

There have been a few posts back and forth about CalMac, since the
first days of this newsgroup last year. I am surprised myself at the
infrequency, given that a CalMac journey to the mainland is more
likely to be a matter of necessity than a P&O crossing to France.
Does anyone else feel that the Isle of Bute gets a raw deal compared
to the mainland peninsula of Cowal in terms of fares, frequency of
service, hours, reliability etc.? Cowal residents at least have the
choice of using the competing Western Ferries route, or going the long
way round by road!

There have been ongoing rumours about Western Ferries running a route from
Ardyne to Port Bannatyne at some stage.
And they have a two-ship service from CalMac..

(Sorry for the delay in replying.)
But we often lose our second ferry if there is a breakdown elsewhere
in the fleet. We also lose it on Cowal Gathering weekend - for our
equivalent, tomorrow's (Saturday) Bute Highland Games, we only get an
extra ferry from the Cowal route "if required".
Also, in the winter there is only usually a single ferry running at
the morning commuter peak (I haven't seen this winter's timetable yet
- I'm not sure when it is available).
