True 'old fashioned' PAYG

Are there any of the true PAYG sims around anymore and if so from where
please?

Few calls are made each month, not many texts and 3G is extremely limited
as the user tends to go wireless at home or find a hotspot whilst out
(McD's for example).

So rather than have to top up each month to get the 3 aformentioned they
are looking for a PAYG which they can top-up with £20 every now and then
and just pay for the internet, calls, texts as they use them.

Recommendations much appreciated

GiffGaff - it uses the O2 network

It is a true a PAYG service (for calls, text and data) and an OPTIONAL
"Goodybag" facility.

<http://giffgaff.com/index/pricing>

The data charge on the true PAYG is 20p for 20Mbytes per day BUT 20p for
every 1 Mbyte per day after that.

It may be worth reading the GG forums before signing up
<http://community.giffgaff.com/>
Also get a SIM from someone on the forum and they get £5 credit and YOU
get £5 credit when you top-up first time with £10.

Depending on the mix:

icard mobile: (Vodafone; land 3p; mobile 6p, text 4p, i'net 10p/MB)
http://www.icardmobile.co.uk/
They revisit the tariff frequently (they say when in advance) but it's
not changed for months; UK use only

Tesco Lite: (O2 - charge by second after first minute; land 8p; mobile
8p; text 4p; i'net 60p/MB or £2 per 7days (rolling)

I thought about GiffGaff - but they decided to "punish" the casual user
for the benefit of the big users (10p vs <4p for calls - ignoring texts
and i'net in the goodybag) :-(

Unfortunately I don't recommend GG at the moment. Hence I'm not
posting my affliate link. They seem to have a lot of problem with
their web-site and often I can't purchase top-ups and goodybags. Their
support is utterly useless and their community is full of kids.

AFAIK the cheapest tariff for low users is Tesco lite (4p/8p) although
this may have changed recently.

If the OP ever wants to use 3G data, then Tesco PAYG Lite isn't such a
good deal - 60p per MB, maximum daily charge of £5:
http://phone-shop.tesco.com/tesco-mobile/help-and-support/call-charges-
payg-litetariff.aspx

Asda Mobile is 10p/minute, 6p per text. Data is 75p for 25MB, 50p per MB
after that:
http://www.asdamobile.com/compare_tariffs.html

I use Giffgaff because it's very flexible - useful if one's life isn't
the same each month. The network seems OK (it's O2, after all) but their
systems for topping up, porting numbers, etc fall over quite often, and
contacting their customer service agents takes at least 24 hours. But if
you don't need customer service, that's not an issue.

possible. The last 3 "tickets" I raised *never* had any response and

As far as 3G data is concerned, I see Virgin Mobile now offer 1GB of
data for £5 a month. I used that when I was in the UK for a few weeks
over Christmas and it suited me perfectly.

There's also TalkMobile and FamilyMobile on the same 4p/8p pricing.
FamilyMobile data is 20p/MB, TalkMobile is 25p/day (seems like anything
below [guesses number] 10KBish is charged at a per-penny rate so using one
byte doesn't cost you 25p). Giffgaff (6p/10p calls/texts) is 20p per day
but the first MB is charged at 20p (ie 100KB costs 2p) so the data is a lot
cheaper than TalkMobile if you don't use a full MB every day.

GG have been having some serious problems with their web service but it
doesn't seem to affect all customers. They are slow to resolve issues
for customers with problems.

My recommendation is never activate a SIM, top up or buy anything from
them in the evening - just before they close down their systems for the
day.

Purchase top-ups etc. at 10/11 am.

Thanks for the useful info and offers everyone.

It seems that the person mostly likely to receive calls is on a Talkmobile
tariff so the probability is that the maker of the calls will use them
also. Not that there is necessarily any logic behind that!

I had trouble earlier in the week, I forgot when exactly.
The web site was very slow and timed out during the transaction.
I tried later in the week and it was fine.
In the meantime SWMBO tried to top up with her CC using the phone and
managed to accidentally get a PAC.

I don't envisage needing support, I actually find the cheap and
cheerful concept rather appealing.

Lucky you. I've got several accounts and had them for a while and
I've *never* managed to top-up via a card. Although I am finding
other web-sites now where I can't pay by card.

Also the last few months I keep seeing on their web site that I can't
buy goodybags.

Present company excepted of course, but in my experience a persons
credit worthiness is often inversely proportional to the number of
cards they carry.

The most important factor is coverage in the areas you intend to use it.
If O2 is OK then Giffgaff or Lycamoble or Tesco are good
If Vodafone is OK then Asda or Lebara.
If Orange then Now mobile could be worth a look

Yes, I have to agree, if you drew £70 worth of fuel at a forecourt and
found you didn't have the means to pay, it would be more than
embarrassing.

It can also work the other way around. People who have never borrowed
money in their lives can find it difficult if they ever need to apply
for any form of credit because they have no credit history against
which a credit assessment can be made.
