6 months ago I took out a 24-month contract via e2save.com (the network is
Talkmobile and I believe both companies are subsidiaries/partners of
Carphone Warehouse). I've always been on PAYG before where a £10 topup
lasted me about 4 or 5 months on average, so it was the low cost of the
contract at £7.50/month that attracted me.

I paid £45 up front for the handset, a refurbished HTC Desire HD, and to be
honest, it's crap. It may well be my own fault for buying a refurbished
handset but my understanding of the word "refurbished" means that any faults
or problems have been sorted and its like new again so I thought it'd be
great.

If I listed all the problems I'm having with it, this could turn into a very
long post [1], so I'll just say that I went to Poland recently with a mate
of mine and everything I tried to do on my phone, whether that be making
calls as a phone, or using wifi to Skype back to my wife, or use the maps to
locate things, *nothing* worked as it should.

My mate, however, has an iPhone 4S and everything he wanted to do on it just
worked brilliantly, without any fuss or bother. I've never, ever, wanted
anything to do with Apple or iPhones or any iThing at all, but I was just
*so* disappointed with my HTC and *so* impressed with his iPhone that I may
have to change my mind.

This being my first ever phone contract, I know nothing about the legalities
or how the contracts work. Can I just buy a different, unlocked, phone
(iPhone or not), put my SIM in it and carry on for the rest of the contract
or is the contract somehow locked to the handset?

[1] One problem with it is that sometimes when I make an outgoing call (to
any number), I don't hear the DTMF tones as I press the number keys. When
this happens, I don't hear the exchange ring tone in my ear either - the
called phone apparently rings, but when they answer it they can't hear me
and I can't hear them, just silence at both ends. The handset then needs to
be "restarted" - not power-cycled (turning off and on doesn't help unless I
also take out the battery) but press the power button and select "Restart"

Another indicator of the same problem is that if I've had the handset
powered off overnight, when I switch it on, sometimes the 'HTC start-up
sound' will be at a quieter volume than normal. If that happens, I can
*guarantee* that I'll then have the above problem.

TIA and sorry about the long post

I usually read "refurbished" as would turn on so they gave it a wipe
with a dry cloth and repacked it.

I think you can put the sim into any phone (provided the phone will
accept that type of sim) and the contract will continue.

If you are going to pay a fortune for an unlocked smartphone why not
consider the nexus 4 at £239 for the 8 GB version or 279 for the 16GB
version - provided you buy it from Google Play. Everywhere else will be
a lot higher - Amazon currently have it from £428 new or £360 used.

You will have to wait until Google Play get more stock and even then it
may be like a pre-order. I ordered mine on the 4th of this month and
expect delivery in the middle of January.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'll have thrown this thing in the fish
pond by then so I'll have to go with something else. Thanks for the
info about the contract though, that's what I was hoping.

Don't worry. There's plenty of decent non-Apple handsets about.
The Samsung Galaxy Range are mostly decent (avoid cheapest ones
though).

I bought a "refurbished" net-book from PCWorld in March.

They messed about offering it for sale in January (but no stock...),
changing the model number (same spec') and raising the price by £50 in
February and then offering the old model number "refurbished" for £50 less
in March - net swing £100 to me :-))

As expected it was actually remaindered, still had the polythene protection
on the plastic and went through W7 initial start up when switched on - i.e.
actually brand new. The only pain was that I had to have it sent to my home
rather than just pick it up from on of their shops when I was passing
(grrr!).

So
HP Net-book = 9/10
PCW service = -1/10

Given the way they carried on at a corporate level I was surprised when it
was Comet that went bust.

Remembering, of course, that the Nexus 4 takes a micro-SIM ... so a
mini-SIM card from a Desire HD will need to be cut down to size.

Of course, an iPhone 4 or 4s would require the same, and an iPhone 5
needs a nano-SIM.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Indeed yes. I was going to buy the S3 until I came across the Nexus 4.
But you do have to wait for the latter.

Mine was a second-hand iPhone 4. You should have no issues with the
contract, but may need to cut own the sim. Sim-cutters are available
very cheaply on ebay - more accurate than a hand-held stanley knife!

Mine arrived yesterday :-)

Lucky sod. :-)

Pleased with it?

Actually, not that concerned, just pleased that this time I was actually
able to order it. Since I went for the 16GB version I did have a few
days this time.

Yes, feels nice in the hand if a little slippery, I wish they hadn't
made it *quite* so big. As far as software goes, smooth really is the
word. I was worried battery life might let it down, certainly I
hammered it yesterday while first playing with it, today in more normal
usage it's been almost as good as the old nexus one ...
