Skype Directories

free calls to other Skype users. This is all well and good - except that I
haven't a clue how to find which of my potential contacts use Skype.
I have set up a Skype account on the phone, and have received a welcome
email pointing me at the Skype website. The Help info on the site suggests
that I should be able to log on to my account (using my PC), and then click
on a Directory tab to search for other users. But when I log on, there's no
Directory tab to be seen - only tabs for managing the account and buying
credits - which I don't wish to do.
I haven't actually downloaded and installed the Skype application on my PC
because I won't be using it for making Skype phone calls. Do I need to do so
in order to access the Directory? If not, how else do I do it?

Loading Skype on your PC and using your mobile account name
does make editing and using your mobile Skype settings much easier

And you will find that once loaded Skype on your PC will keep being
refreshed as contacts come online or go offline. On the S2 you will
frequently find that your contacts seem to be offline or away (small
grey cross icon or orange icon); whereas on the PC they may well be
flagged as being online (small green tick icon). Apparently the S2
does not keep refreshing the list of contacts with each one's
availability status.
Irritatingly if a contact on the S2 is flagged as offline (or away)
then it refuses to connect to it, even if on the PC that same contact
is flagged as being online.
The only way I've found of refreshing the status of the contacts on
the S2 is to turn the phone off and then on again so as to have to re-
sign into Skype. This makes using Skype on the S2 an irritation rather
than being really user-friendly. So much for being a smart phone - so
smart it has to be switched off and then on again to update the list
of Skype contacts!!
And don't expect to connect to an online contact every time.
Frequently Skype connections fail. Sound quality can range from good
to appallingly bad. Best to get used to the quality on your PC first.
And your contacts will not be able to intitate a call to your S2
either. You'll have to call them - every time.
The S2 is cheap and unreliable rubbish - as is '3's services in
general. Skype is good on a PC, but on a mobile phone - don't expect
miracles ...

Here is a suggestion of two easy ways:
i) go to add contact -> enter your contacts e-mail address or name and see
what results get offered back
ii) install Skype on your PC - then go to add contact -> you will then be
able to enter names, e-mail addresses or other details and get a list of
search results

I think you should have a play with the phone a bit more. To refresh Skype
contacts on the S2 you just open the Skype contacts list, then click
'Options', and the first option is 'Refresh Now'. Also, you can't expect a
mobile phone running Skype, with varying signal strengths, to be as reliable
as a computer connected to the Internet, and if your signal drops, of course
your contacts available are going to change as you are not available to
them, and they are not available to you.

Because if you are saying incomming Skype calls to the S2 are not possible

Not on mine it isn't.
I've updated the Skype application and this option appears to have
been removed, although I did see it before.

Half right.
It is cheap, but so far I've found it sturdy, well designed and
perfectly reliable - with excellent RF performance.

If you install the Skype application on your computer and if you use one of
the more common email management applications, you can either point Skype to
your email application and it will search the email addresses and look for
registered Skype users. It will then give you the option to send them a
note requesting that their details be added to your contacts list.
Once they have approved this, their contact details will be added to your
Skype account, which you can access from any Skype-enabled phone or
application.

Thanks - that's what I was missing. I suspected that I probably needed to
install the Skype application on my PC, but I wasn't sure. I'll give it a

Yes, I'd seen that - but couldn't find the Directory tab! The email I
received after setting up my account on the phone simply said "log on to
your Skype account" - which I did - using my browser - but it didn't tell me
that I also needed the Skype application on my PC.

Actually my brother found it impossible to call me using his
non-'3'mobile with Skype installed. Likewise I could not call him
using my S2. At the same time I could call him via my laptop without
any problems.
And unfortunately - as pointed out in another thread - if you have
Skype running on a PC and a call comes in the S2 grabs it and diverts
it to '3's voicemail before allowing the PC version to respond.

And the two listings of the statuses of contacts are not commensurate.
For example on my laptop my brother's Skype id was shown greyed out

the S2 still considered his id as offline and refused to connect.

When I first got my S2, I set up a separate Skype account just for the phone
as I thought it might cause conflicts with the computer, and I named it
HarrysSkypeMobile in my contacts list so others could distinguish between
accounts, this also has the added advantage of allowing test calls to be
made between phone and computer.

This is down to the way 3 interfaces wqith skype. It's not a true skyp
call that you're making when you dial from the skypephone. All that
happens is your skypephone makes a normal voice connection to some
internal element of hte 3 network which turns it into a skype call.
The phone does not maintain a constant data connection which is why the
contacts don't refresh.

The PC application allows you to import your address book, and if any of
those email addresses are asscoiateds with a skype account you will have
the option of adding some, none or all of them to your directory.

Sorry I never did get round to reporting back on my experience with
Skype/VoIP as I said I would about 3 months ago in your own very useful
thread, the reason being I just haven't got round to using it!
However I can report that I was successful in setting it up as per your
instructions, it worked fine for a handful of test calls to my landline, but
I live in a part of town where the 3network coverage is a bit hit and miss.
A week or three ago I was trying to login to Skype on the S2 phone and I was
'forced' into accepting a software version upgrade before it would allow me
to do so. I couldn't find any way around it so I did the upgrade, and had a
choice of, I think, 2 later versions. I chose the earlier (lower number) of
the 2 which was 3.80.0.2 as reported by Ian Smith in this thread.
I have just had another mess with it (had to re-enable some pbxes trunks
after an outage a few weeks ago apparently). I added a further Betamax
account which had some free days on it and then made a few test calls to my
landline. I also called another UK number and a Swedish number, but both
people were not available so I couldn't check if there were any quality
issues.
Hopefully at least that answers your question about whether the DTMF tones
are passed with the new Skype version installed. Sorry I can't confirm
whether tones still repeat (the displayed number doesn't repeat), but I
think they probably are because something is happening if the keys are
pressed for too long, i.e. invalid number messages etc. (presumablyfrom
JustVoIP).
If the keys are pressed carefully, successful dialing seems possible most of
the time.
