I hear this comes with a "Sky" firmware, can you trash it in favour of a
standard Netgear version?

Thanks
Kev

Excellent, thanks.

Hopefully my router will arrive before activation so that I can try it out
on my OneTel connection.

As long as the OP gets his username and password first (mossywell bounce sky
router), he shouldnt have a problem.

I would suggest that all sky broadband users download this excellent utility
just to get the username and password to paste into a text file, should the
router go tits up.

Yes I would, why would that cause a problem?

Does this obtain the original user id/password in order to use the router?

Could be problems as not only would you have to findout/setup sky
passwords but
their firmware also includes the setup so they (sky) can do things to
your connection remotely.
Although some may disagree, this may actually be an advantage if you
have future problems.
Also you may be going againts their Ts and Cs if you do so and have
further problems in future.

It does. Even though the username is the mac address of the sky router
followed by @skydsl any router can be used without mac spoofing or
anything like that.

(Aside)

I tested it with my old Origo 8400 which got rescued from oblivion by
Mr Mugwump's rather good recovery cd.

Thanks for that Mr Mugwump (I know you post here occasionally)

If someone is going to do something stupid, it isnt for me to stop them, I
just suggested he put on a crash helmet, so he can get himself back up and
running should he fuck up.

Hmmm, I'm not looking to stick Netgear's firmware on there if the Sky one is
good enough I guess.
