Unrelated but with isp's that have a cap is it uploaded and downloaded data
that counts towards your cap or just downloaded?

I've had no problems with pipex at all... I don't beleve they have a cap on
any service they offer.

NB. The problem was probably down to a faulty free modem - when I tried
another make it worked fine! Speeds excellent and system very good - but
technical assistance if you have a problem was in my experience appalling!

I guess the majority "clambouring for it" are attracted by the "free" tag
and the voice calls offer, without any understanding that they will be a
little more remote from BT's fault reports (having to go via the TT CS,
which will not be fun if they are coping with many hundred thousand new
customers, on top of many thousands of existing Carphone Warehouse users).
They do - 1Gb on the cheapest contracts
They "used" to be good - that is to say i`m still with them, but now
think twice before recommending them. I`ve had very few issues as far as
reliability is concerned* but the cost to performance ratio is now quite
high.
* they recently rejigged their web servers as offered as part of the
packages - and its now complete sh*te - they appear to be running some
sort of transparent proxy service which still serves up old data despite
you changing it, and JPG support is *still* f*cked 3 weeks down the line
(corrupted images - re-uploading does not resolve the issue !)
Did someone mention "doing a Demon" ? :-/

AFAIK its simply classed as data traffic, but I could be wrong. For most
people, the uploaded data probably only accounts for 5-10% of their
downloaded data.

They bandwidth limit their usenet server(s) to 20KB and two
simultaneous connections. I believe they also traffic manage anyone
using peer to peer (anyone not bright enough to use an encrypting
client, anyway).
I don't use p2p, but the usenet limit is sometimes annoying. Not
annoying enough to make me fork out for a separate usenet service
though.

They were absolutely bloody awful at service in the early days, but
they've got a lot better since then. We use them at work (had an
engineer around today to check out a problem with one of our DSL
lines). I've never had an issue with them that didn't turn out to be
BT's fault.
I used them for 6 months back in 2002 and didn't have a problem with
them. The line was activated 2 days earlier than they said it would be
and I didn't have any reason to ever call their tech support.
I only cancelled with them because I moved to a (at the time) non-ADSL
area.
The main reason I went with them was because they were one of the
cheapest at the time (£23 for 512k if I remember).
They seemed fine to me anyway, despite a lot of people reporting
otherwise on the newsgroups.

actually I think you're correct, not me... but the point was more about
the likelihood of many potential customers being less clued up about what
they're letting themselves in for if they switch to TalkTalk... Peter M.

For peer-to-peer it could be double the downloaded data, if someone has a
popular item (I recently tried BitComet or something, and a set of maps
seemed incredibly popular... a few hundred MB of uploading from files
totalling under 30 MB...) Peter M. PS how are the .co.uk domains!
Think yourself lucky - the maps i`ve got are over a Gb :-} (as you can
imagine they`d take a while to seed if I happened to be that way
inclined)

I`ve got the majority redirected to my free Pipex webspace for now - but
Pipex are absolute crap atm if you`ve spotted my other recent posts -
broken transparent proxies, data corruption, serving up old versions of
data you`ve altered...
I never did anything with the unfaithfulb*stard and b*tch domains (i`ve
just renewed them as i`m quite partial to them, if only for the novelty
value of being able to hand out email addresses that make people laugh),
but i`m thinking of going with a cheap host like Pogga shortly, as i`ve
got a couple of sites "unofficially" nested under my existing free
webspace.
The image corruption is a bit of an issue as one was a temporary gallery
for a colleague who does abstract art, although they`re in the process
of trying to get seperate hosting themselves.
The "main" domain name I hand out these days is a bit of a joke on my
employer and a "sub-contractor" we recently re-bought back - after 3
years saying to myself "some b*stard is going to get that" (the obvious
UK domain name you`d expect them to have) I did :-p
- i`ve made no secret of it, its a standing joke in work and with my
contacts at the company concerned, and would have no qualms selling it
to them for a nominal fee, but no-one has had the nerve to ask :-p

I don't know much about Pipex, I do know they use giganews for newsgroups so
you get very good retention of articles and binaries.

They are not the same as they used to be - existing customers just get
left behind - and they have 12 month contracts even if you just want to
change from an obsolete product they left you on.
It must be 3 weeks now and their "50meg proffesional webspace" is still
broken. You get the feeling all the techies have left..
They just started 24/7 throttling of bittorrent so warner/sky type
services won't work.
They turned off the text news server without a word of warning - and had
I been stupid enough to get locked into a 12 month contract by leaving
my legacy/slow/overpriced account they would have wanted me to pay extra
for news.
While they are 12month contracts - I wouldn't reccomend anyone to go to
pipex. I am free and maxed as of yesterday - existing customers have no
date to be able to get max - they are advertising max on TV - new
customers only.

Overall, I have had no major problems with TT although I don't tend to use
p2p too often as that can be a slow and painful experience! My main reason
for leaving is that I have been paying the crazy amount of Ł25 a month for
this. They would not let me change tariff saying wrongly that I couldn't
change mid contract. Last week I called them up to ask what deal they could
do me and all they could offer was the standard advertised deal which I
can't get here anyway so decided to jump ship.
Now thinking about going to Nildram for a few months till the market settles
down again as they offer month to month contracts, wise move?
