I just took delivery of my nebula USB2 digital TV box
Oh what an afternoon I have

Looks like the Nova-T isn't so bad after all.

First off, I have all the latest USB2 drivers as the leaflet that comes with
advices and I have WinXP

Connecting up the nebby seemed fin at first it connected, windows found it
asked to point to the drives (I had downloaded DigiTV 2.11)

But then the problems started,

First it wouldn't not find BBC1, yet BBC2 it found................
Then while watching BBC2 I noticed that every few seconds the video would
"glitch" and the sound would cut out (Never been a problem on my nova-T or
my Panasonic set top box downstairs)
Now I was using a 5m USB lead (not USB2 certified) so I thought "Maybe it's
errors in the USB transfer"

So I moved the nebby to right next to my PC and pulled the HQ Coax cable I
use across to my PC and use the really short cable supplier (Which I guess
is USB2)
I plug it in to my Adaptec USB2/Firewire Combo card (AUA3121)
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
nothing...................................................... (Check the
power etc..)
Change ports A-ha!!! it find the nebby, asks for a the nebby driver I point
it to it

Start up digiTV "Crack........... snip....... crack" same break in the video
every few seconds and losss of sound
Now this could be that supprise supprise the Nebby is actually poorer at
receiving the singnal over the Nova-T and panny box as I am in fringe
reception area
But I think....... well it could be RF escaping down the USB cable from the
PC and interfering with the Nebby, so I put some ferrit coils on... no joy.

Then I try a USB cable with coils built in...........................
nothing............... no nebby detected..... nothing

So I go back to the orginal lead............ nothing dead........ no nebby
detected

I reboot...... nothing it's not there
I look in the hardware profile for USB, USB2 Hub (My USB card's) I look
under power it has (Unknown device, 4 ports free) It's a 5 port hub.
So I think why isn't it coming up in device manager, why is it not there

Anyway I change ports and it then says "2 unknown devices and 3 ports free"
So I try then last external USB2 port and............... it jumps in to
life.

Still choppy video (maybe I need an aerial upgrade as the nebby is not so
good.... maybe)

I reboot.............. nothing......... not there

Go through the whole port changing thing again........... nothing

Anyway. if I repeat the whole process 10 times. it finds it... if not it
doesn't after reboot Argggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

If I connect the nebby to my mobo's USB port (Which it won't work on) it
finds it stright away, so I guess the nebby is working properly (Or is it)

It could be my USB2 card is poo, I don't know

I could get the USB2 issue out of the way and still find I have a problem
with recption or the two could be linked

Either way I am :@ Not a happy bunny after parting with £130 to replace
something that worked but not as well as everyone on here says the Nebby is
(When it works the software is ace...... I give it that......... but unless
the hardware I have is faulty......... then I am very much not impressed)

Arggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh any
suggestions (I have removed all other devices, removed and moved the USB2
card to another slot and tried standing on my head)
Arggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I might just send it back and ask for the PCI version......... but I really
liked the idea of a "plug and play" USB2 product "DOH!"

Some people have reported problems with some USB2 cards, have you contacted
Nebula about it? They are normally very helpful. I've not got mine yet so
I can't post comments on it.

Cybersoga-I think you are a bit of a gadget geek like myself judging by all
the postings I have seen you make recently!! Is this true? Do you have alot
of gadgets kicking about and do you get a buzz from getting the latest toy
like myself? lol.

I will contact them tomorrow and see if they have any known issues, but I
think I might go out and get a different USB2 card (Sort of makes a mockery
of me choosing the USB2 version of the PCI as I only have one PCI slot left)

I've got it working (Well it can find it and start up etc...) for the moment
(I haven't rebooted or disconnected for fear of it not comming back)

However the spurts and cut outs remain, though if I let it just sit there
and watch TV it rarely happens, if I start doing other things (like this) I
can hear the sound cutting out.

But looking at my CPU usage, that isn't a problem (I have a P4 1.8Ghz)

If I switch the MPEG decoding off "Silent recording" the play back is still
affected (even in PowerDVD)

Still confused in "Techincal info" it says Single Strength 63% and SNR 22dB
The Nova T reports signal strength as 76% hmmmmm!!

Odd sounds like either poor signal or irq issues. Open digitv press the 'i'
key on the keyboard and leave it for a bit, then report back what the
readings are and this will tell if its the signal or the hardware or
software etc..

There some issues with the Adaptec Duoconnect card chipset. It was one of
the early USB2 HBAs and can have IRQ problems (I think it is based on the
NEC chipset, I used to have one)

Got mine yesterday and I've not been able to get it to work - although my
PC (a7v33 mobo, win xp sp1) has 4 USB 2.0 sockets, whichever one I put it
in the PC says "A hi-speed USB device is plugged into a non- hi-speed USB
hub".

I think part of the problem may be that it has the built in hub and that
this has to be detected first, most of the time I can't mine to see it.

I am going to go out an buy a cheap £17 USB2 card just to make sure.
But if it still will only detect it on 1 in 10 boots, back it goes!! (I will
try another PC just to make sure too)

I might have a poor signal as well, which replacing the coax from my aerial
will improve, but I have never had a problem with my other two digital boxes
:-(

Try going in to hardware properties and disabling the USB1 root hub, so that
you just have the USB2 root hub, I got mine working like this (For awhile)

I tried disabling various usb devices and then found that neither the
mouse(usb) or keyboard(ps2) would work! Thank goodness for safe mode and
setting a system restore point :-)

I'll try just disabling that one tonight and experiment with usb drivers
from mobo's cd.

Thankfully this is not the intended pc to be used with it - I have a new
semi-dedicated pc to build once the final (and most important) components
have arrived.

Shuttle SN41G2 (nforce2), AMD XP2600+, 1Gb PC2700 RAM, 160Gb HD,
Pioneer 105 DVD-R/RW, Nebula DigiTV (USB 2.0 version), Windows XP Home

Sounds cool, I just spent £11 on a new 4 port via chipset USB2 card, so I
will soon see if this is the problem

This time..................... The VIA card finds the USB2 hub, installs the
drivers..........then loses them.

Nebula support are sending me another one to play with tomorrow, he said it
sounds like a power issue that probably is causing the clitches in the
reception too (When it works that is)

So role on tomorrow, finger crossed :-)

Does your motherboard have an Ali chipset?
I had problems (using a lacie USB2 card) because I had lowered PCI latency
to
work around a conflict between my ali chipset and my old analog PCI tv card

I kept getting breakups, especially when accessing the net (usb wireless
adapter) or my hd
Analysing my hd (with defrag) caued major breakups

All this went away when I changed PCI latency back to the default value in
the BIOS (32 i think)

Hope this helps,

Rhys

http://www.bangkokpost.com/Database/18Jun2003_datacol61.html might be of
interest to you. It seems that not all USB 2 devices are USB 2! So, are
both of your USB 2 devices the same kind of USB 2?!

Thankfully I know that my mobo Asus A7V333 uses a VIA VT6202 USB2.0

Hopefully when I've built the new PC which will be running the DigiTV I
won't have this problem.
