I've been popping in here (and rsg) every so often but there seems to be
so little going on that its not very high up on my priorities, well that
and playing golf, doing club committee things, studying geology and even
a bit of working for a living:-)

(One consolation is that I will then be an honorary member with no
fees to pay.
I still play four times a week with a 13 handicap but this frozen
period has made it more than unpleasant.
Don't suppose that the old uk sport golf will ever function again.
Nice if a new one commenced.

Johnty is about the only one I know... he drops in on us over here on
occassion.
I envy you to still be playing... I was still at it til I was 82, but
had to quit to care for my life's love. I was your age when I stopped
but was shooting my age fairly often. Never played again, and now the
body just can't hack it. Played for 75 years and I'll always miss the
game and the wonderful fraternizing that was part it.

From Arizona, an ocean and a continent away, I do look in here often.
Johnty is about the only one I know... he drops in on us over here on

people. I only started when I was 34 so my 46 years pales into
insignificance alongside your 75. You must have started as a little
one. How about that youg girl of 14 in New Zealand who has just won an
adult ladies professional tournament. Some going at 14!!

fellow came up to them and, seeing how old they were, asked if he
could give them a little test. They agreed and he asked Charlie "Tell
me what is the result of 3 times 5?" Charlie quickly replied "One
hundred and twenty three." The young guy looked a bit puzzled but then
looked at Bill and asked him the same question "Tell me what is the
result of 3 times 5?" Bill waited a little while and then answered
"Wednesday". More puzzlement followed and the young guy turned to the
youngest one of the three, Albert. "What is 3 times 5?" After waiting
for some seconds Albert answered "Fifteen"
The young guy looked very relieved when he heard that and said to
Albert "I'll buy you another pint for getting that right but first
will you tell me how you came to that answer 15"
"Its easy" said Albert " I just took 123 from Wednesday!"

golfer, but had started late in life. He had won a couple of hundred
Sterling trophies, all but 4 or 5 were destroyed by fire when our home
burned in '31. He was close enough to the game that he knew several
celebrities... Chick Evans was a good friend of his. I knew him too,
but later in life. He used to send me a postcard from the Nat'l
Amateur every year.
We moved to Central Florida in '25 and all of those courses were like
7th heaven for him. He had already determined that I wasn't going to
wait that long... took me to a local course and began my education.
He would instruct me on the proper swing, and HOW to achieve it. He
broke the swing down into six or seven segments (not 12 or 15 like
they do now.) His instructions included the premise, "if you;re having
a problem, choose ANY of those segments and work on perfecting it.
When you are satisfied, you'll get a surprise. The rest of the
segments will fall in line. Worked for me!
Believe it or not, during that first year, I never hit a ball, at
least not while he was present. :) He gave me his time for about an
hour and then... he sent me out on the course and I had to shag balls
for him, but it was worth it.
Had my lowest round ever in 1938, a 67 on a short course up in N.
Carolina. However, "golf" as an integral part of my life, changed with
the WWII. I continued to play but, the love of my life and four
marvelous children became my focus, and being basically, a lazy bum,
had to concentrate on providing for them. I still played but, never
with the effort it took to be GOOD! I first shot my age in '78 and did
it with some regularity until I quit for good in 2001. The love of my
life became terminally ill, and one son and I cared for her for the
balance of her life, 2008... with minor bumps now and then, 65 years
with that beautiful lady!
That's way too much chatter for one day, or maybe a week, or...

Have a son-in-law and a grandson who play, and ask for help now and
then... have a fairly extensive collection of "golf" memorabilia...
watch some on TV and that's it, except for lookin' in on these
newsgroups now and then.

Never knew what happened to that first trophy that you made for the
first uk.sport.golf meeting at Hill Valley. No doubt someone has it
locked up in a trophy cabinet.
I see Salmond is trying hard to split the UK and take you Scots into
independence. I see it as a crazy move and not as an anglo for I've
spent a lot of my life in Scotland. My only daughter was born a Scot.

Do you still study the rules? I keep on forgetting them now with my
memory. ( That's often convenient on the course :-) )
