A player, expecting his shot may well go into a bunker, rakes the bunker
to improve the surface before he plays.
Is this OK

Yes.

There is no restriction under Rule 13-2 or Rule 13-4 if his ball does
not lie in the bunker.

13-2/28 Smoothing Irregularities in Bunker Situated Between Ball and Hole

Q. There is a bunker between A's ball and the hole. Before playing, A
smoothes footprints and other irregularities in the bunker on his line of
play. Was A in breach of Rule 13-2?

A. Yes, such action would improve the line of play, contrary to Rule 13-2.

Ok...we were not aware, from the original post, as to whether the bunker
in question was actually on the line of play. "Expecting his shot may
well go into a bunker" is not that specific. (I always expect my shots
to go into bunkers, line of play or not, and they usually do!!) There
are a whole bunch of decisions on "improving the line of play" in this
context. and if this IS the case then you are right.....and the Decision
is relevant.

So, exactly what situation did you have in mind
then when you read the post? What else can,
'...There is a bunker between A's ball and the
hole...' possibly mean?

Go to agree with Ruth on this one. I saw the 2 answers and could not
believe they could be true.
The rules experts have been caught out on this one.
